Ruth Elizabeth Sweaney

Ruth E. Sweaney, 90, passed away on December 4, 2023, surrounded by her family. Ruth was born in Williamstown, West Virginia and was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Helen Davis; her brothers, Harold Davis, Ralph Davis, Robert Davis, and Eddie Davis; her spouse, Robert E. Sweaney; and her son, Keith M. Sweaney. Ruth graduated from West Virginia University, where she met and married Robert Eugene Sweaney. Ruth was raised and lived in West Virginia, and she later moved to Richmond, VA. For the past 34 years Ruth lived at the “river house”, in Chickahominy Haven. It was at the river that many memories were shared due to her gracious entertaining and love for her family and friends. Ruthie as she was known in her hometown, played the organ in church, and rode her pony to the family car dealership. In later years she volunteered for many organizations including Meals on Wheels. She was a selfless caregiver to her family, and known to many as simply, Grandma. As she was the epitome of that title. Ruth is survived by her sons, Brian of Mechanicsville, VA, his spouse, Deen; Rob of Williamsburg, VA and his spouse, Terry; and daughter-in-law, Carol of Fredericksburg, VA. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Jessica, Kelly (Brad), Katrina, Michael (Lindsay), Kristen (Kyle), and Shawn(Logan); and seven great-grandchildren, Haylee, Colby, Caleb, Liam, Clare, Declan, and Autumn. A memorial and celebration of life will take place January 20, 2024 at Williamsburg United Methodist Church at 11:00 am followed by a graveside service at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
