

Sonja Carver Bates, 88, of Williamsburg, Virginia was born on April 6, 1937 in Marietta, Pennsylvania, entered into the presence of the Lord peacefully at her home (Verena) with family by her side, on January 24, 2026. She reunited with Joe L. Bates in Heaven, her husband of 63 years.
Sonja was in the first graduating class of Donegal High School before earning her degree from Millersville University, both in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She then worked for the Central York School District as an Elementary School teacher in York, Pennsylvania.
Sonja was very dedicated to her spiritual journey and attended several Bible study groups. She would say, "I'm at peace knowing by Grace that I am saved through Jesus Christ."
She also loved playing tennis and golf. Sonja greatly enjoyed her life at Kingsmill and most recently at the Verena, both located in Williamsburg, Virginia. Her time spent with family and cultivating friendships meant the world to her.
Sonja is survived by her son, Bret Bates; daughter, Blis Szala (Anthony Flick); grandchildren, Brittany Szala (Shawn Mac) and Andrew Szala (Dana Szala); and her sister, Frances Larson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Verena at the Reserve, 121 Reserve Way, Williamsburg, Virginia on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 2:00 PM.
