Stephen Mangum Norfleet

Dr. Stephen Mangum Norfleet, 75, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2022. He was a loving husband to his wife Carol for more than 51 years, devoted father and grandfather, caring physician, and friend to many.

Steve was born in Norfolk, VA, and grew up in Suffolk, VA, where he graduated from Suffolk High School in 1965. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Richmond in 1969, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1973. He went on to complete his Family Practice Residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA, from 1973 to 1976, and earned the title Chief Resident. From there, Steve joined Denbigh Family Practice and began a decades-long career as a family physician in Newport News. “Dr. Steve” was beloved by his patients, staff, and the medical community for more than 30 years. Steve was proud to have helped found Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group (TPMG) in 1992, and after leaving private practice at Denbigh Family Medicine in 2007, he became Medical Director of TPMG until his retirement in 2014.

Throughout his career, Steve was active within the American Academy of Family Physicians, Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, Newport News Medical Society, and Hampton Roads Academy of Family Physicians. He served as a member as well as in leadership roles, including as president of Newport News Medical Society and Hampton Roads Academy of Family Physicians. He was also honored as Physician of the Year in 2005 by the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians.

Steve cherished spending time with family and friends, and he took great pleasure in fishing, boating, dancing, taking family trips to The Outer Banks, and traveling with Carol and friends. He was known for his ever-expanding vegetable garden and loved sharing his bounty with others. One of his most proud accomplishments was serving as a volunteer guardian with Honor Flight Historic Triangle Virginia, escorting World War II veterans to Washington, DC. His first trip was with his father-in-law, and he continued escorting other veterans for many years to come.

Steve is survived by his wife Carol Seaton Norfleet; daughter, Erin Norfleet Gentile; son, Stephen Mangum Norfleet, Jr.; son-in-law, Christopher Gentile; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Norfleet; and his grandchildren, Zachary and Calloway Gentile. He will also be dearly missed by his sisters-in-law, Willie “Teeny” Norfleet, Rugene Paulette and Stephanie Estabrooks; brothers-in-law, Stuart Seaton, Jr., and Bates Estabrooks; his extended Norfleet and Seaton families; and many cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Miriam Norfleet; brothers, Benjamin and James Norfleet; parents-in-law, Stuart and Virginia Seaton; and sister-in-law Sally Seaton.

Steve’s family wishes to express their appreciation for the compassionate care he received at Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg and Williamsburg Landing’s Health and Rehab Center.

Memorial donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, American Parkinson Disease Association, and Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts.

In keeping with Steve’s wishes, an event in celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
