William Ramsburgh deLashmutt (Jr.) a resident of Bethesda-Chevy Chase, MD for most of his life, died on September 29, 2022 in Williamsburg, VA. He was born June 10, 1925 in Washington, D.C., to William R. and Rubye Clark deLashmutt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Julia Reed, Mary Monk, and Jean Carlson. He is survived by his loving wife, Esther Dau Schmidt deLashmutt; his son, William Clark deLashmutt of Farmville, VA; his daughter, Sarah Catherine Nelson, of Williamsburg, VA; two grandchildren and two granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Esther’s son and daughter and their families in Arizona and Iowa.
His first marriage to Patricia Ann Crovo ended in divorce.
Mr. deLashmutt graduated from Charlotte Hall Military Academy in 1942, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 on his 18th birthday and served in World War II as a member of a B-17 bomber crew with the 2nd Bomb Group, 15th Air Force in Italy. He and his crew were shot down on his 19th mission by German anti-aircraft fire in February, 1945. He was awarded two Air Medals and a Presidential Unit Citation with five battle stars relating to the Mediterranean Theater of Operation. He was honorably discharged in November, 1945.
Mr. deLashmutt graduated from Georgetown University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science in Business. He entered the life insurance business with Home Life of N.Y., was consistently among the company’s leaders and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He qualified as a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table, was a member of the Washington, D.C. Estate Planning Council, served on the Board of the D.C. Life Underwriters Association and was a past president of The Leaders Club of D.C. and The Insurance Club of D.C. In 1970, he co-founded and was president of Professional Corporations Limited (PCL) which specialized in providing pension planning and administration, employee benefit plans, and investments to professionals who had incorporated their practices. PCL served clients in four states and the District of Columbia.
After his retirement in 1987, he and Esther built a waterfront home in St. Mary’s County, MD and devoted more time to their other interests including RVing, boating, fishing, crabbing, and golf and spending 3 months each winter in Naples, FL. He had been a golfing member at Columbia Country Club for many years. He and Esther moved to Williamsburg in 2007.
A private memorial service will take place later as he requested.
