William S. Floyd, 79, of Williamsburg, died on December 8, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Neil and Ernest Floyd. He is survived by his wife, Nancy L. Floyd; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Damon Miranda; grandchildren, Dillon and Corrine Miranda; and Ernest’s wife, Patricia Floyd.
William, known as Bill, met his high school sweetheart at age 15. They have shared 64 years together. After high school he earned his B.A. from Virginia Tech before embarking on a career as a supervisory budget officer with the U.S. Department of Education. There he made many friends, played for the office softball team and enjoyed quizzing his staff with geography questions.
Bill was a devoted family man and cherished being a father. He and Nancy raised their daughter in Alexandria and resided there until retirement. While in Alexandria he was active in the community and coached boys’ and girls’ soccer for many years. He was a history buff, particularly fond of 17th century American history and the ships of the era. This interest, played in part, to their move to Williamsburg. For many years he was an active costumed interpreter on the ships of Jamestown, enjoying sharing his love and knowledge with both his colleagues and tourists alike.
More recently, Bill has fully enjoyed community at the Williamsburg YMCA. He shared his warm, jovial and outgoing self fully with all his friends. Known as Mr. Bill to many, he was dedicated to his routine of sharing fruit every Thursday at the Y and checking in on friends. Bill was a generous, giving and thoughtful person.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in memory of Bill Floyd to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, CBF.org. Having grown up in Norfolk, the Chesapeake Bay was an important feature of his life.
He frequented the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay with Nancy and friends. Even when he had moved to Alexandria he shared his love of the bay with his family, chartering head boats with his brother Ernie and their children to enjoy rockfishing and to view the beauty of the bay.
