Barbara Mae Allen

Barbara Mae Allen, known to all as Barb, of Williamston, died peacefully on April 18, 2026, at Brookdale Meridian in Haslett, Michigan. She was born on May 20, 1936, to Alvin and Virginia Launstein in Mason, Michigan, where she grew up before moving with her family to Williamston for her senior year of high school — the community she would call home for the rest of her life.

Barb attended Central Michigan University, earning a two-year teaching certificate. She went on to teach at several country schools, and it was during her time at the Branch School that she met James Allen, who would become her husband. Both having grown up on farms, they shared a deep love of country life that would anchor their home and family for decades to come. She devoted her early adult years to the classroom before turning her full attention to raising her family.

Barb was an extremely hardworking and capable woman whose talents extended well beyond the home and classroom. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter, and those who knew her well may be surprised to learn she once held a motorcycle license — a small reminder that there was always more to Barb than met the eye.

A lifelong member of Crossroads United Methodist Church, faith was the quiet foundation of Barb’s life — expressed not through grand gestures but through decades of faithful service, showing up for her church, her neighbors, and above all her family. She volunteered at her church regularly, tended a garden she loved, and took daily pleasure in watching the birds that gathered at her feeders.

Once her oldest daughter headed off to college, Barb returned to the working world, spending 24 years as an attendance secretary at the Capital Area Career Center in Mason, Michigan. She brought to that role the same steadiness and care she brought to everything she did. She was frugal and practical by nature, always mindful of what she had and making sure her family was taken care of. Independent and strong, she approached life with a quiet determination that those who loved her will never forget.

Above all else, two things defined Barb’s life: her faith in God and her devotion to her family. Being a mother was her greatest joy.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, James Allen, who died in 2021. Theirs was a life built together in the fullest sense.

Barb is survived by her four children, Debora (David) Shipman, Susan (Mike) Koger, Steven (Leighann), and David (Leslie); eight grandchildren, Andrew, Brian, Emily, Sydney, Dillon, Hayden, Kelly, and Keith; and four great-grandchildren, Edith, Parker, Palmer, and Sutton.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Brookdale Memory Care and Hospice of Lansing who lovingly cared for Barb during the final year and a half of her life.

A visitation will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 5589 Van Atta Road, Haslett, Michigan, followed by a celebration of life service at 11:00 a.m. and a luncheon to follow.
