Gene Galvin McNitt, 96, died Friday, December 16, 2011 at Walnut Acres in Mason, Michigan. Born in the Upper Peninsula, she lived most of her live in Ingham County; Haslett, Okemos, and Williamston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harmon and Mary Galvin; two sisters, Thelma Bates and Betty Jane Galvin; and a brother, Pat Galvin; her husband of 68 years, Ralph R. McNitt; a son, Stuart McNitt; a son-in-law, Everett Witty; two daughters-in-law, Maureen McNitt and Emmie McNitt; two granddaughters, Colleen McNitt and Anna Holz; a grandson, Robert Holz; four brothers-in-law, Hugh, Don and Doug McNitt and Richard Bates; five sisters-in-law, Dr. Patricia Spross, Margie Doris, and Carol McNitt and Jane Galvin.
Survivors include four children, Dr. Kay McNitt (John Mogush) of Yorktown, IN; Ralph Thomas McNitt of Burlington, VT; Ann Witty of Muncie, IN; and Michael (Penny) McNitt of Lansing, MI; 13 grandchildren, Douglas (Jenny) Holz, Patrick (LuAnn) Holz, Christopher (Stephanie) Mogush, Kathryn (Brian) Wolff, Maura Hart, Patrick McNitt, Brian McNitt, John (Marion) Witty, David (Angie) Witty, Mary (Frank) Witty-Smith, Charles McNitt, Jason (Jessica) McNitt, and Jessica McNitt (Greg); 18 great grandchildren, Michelle Rene Holz, Michelle Ann Holz, Olivia Holz, Sophia Holz, Alex Holz, Elizabeth Wolff, Jennifer Wolff, John Hart, David Thomas McNitt, Jebadiah Witty, Lucas Witty, Meredith Witty, Nathaniel Witty, Trent Pearson, Gabriella, Camdyn, and Coleton McNitt, and Chris Howard; many nieces and nephews.
Gene was a member of Okemos Community Church for over 50 years. Her great uncle helped to build the first chapel on that property. Her ancestors were the Kirkpatrick family who were the original settlers of Okemos. Her mother was the first white child born in Okemos. Gene was active in child study club, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts; she was an avid gardener and preserved much of her family’s foods. She sewed many of their clothes and made quilts for all the family and helped her husband with the extended family business of real estate and building of fine homes.
Memorial services were held at 12 noon on Monday, December 19, 2011 at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Williamston, Michigan. Burial to follow at Foote Cemetery on Sherwood Road in Williamston.
