
away on March 18, at Martin General Hospital after many years of declining health.
He was born on October 14,1925 in Martin County to the late James Simon and Lillie
Belle McClaren Beach. After graduating from Robersonville High School in 1943, Joe
served in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre for 2 years.
On January 18,1947 he married the love of his life, Madeline Bailey. Joe worked
with Virginia Electric and Power Company as an electrician in the Substation
Department. He retired in 1987 with 33 years of service.
Before and after his retirement, Joe spent many hours in his woodshop crafting
beautiful pieces of handmade furniture for his home as well as for his children and
grandchildren.
Joe was a lifelong member of West End Baptist Church where he served on the
Deacon Board and Chairman of Deacon Board, Sunday School Superintendent and
teacher.
Joe is survived by his wife of 69 years, Madeline B. Beach, of the home; son, Robert
C. Beach and wife Lynn; daughter, Patricia B. Griffin and husband Roy both of
Williamston; grandchildren, Lindsay B. Powell of Williamston Lara Beach B. McNeill
and husband Robert of Wilmington, Clay Griffin and wife Kristy of Williamston, Ashley
Griffin of Durham; great grandchildren, Joel Powell, Mason Griffin, John and Claire
McNeill
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 21, at 11:00 a.m. at West End Baptist
Church with Pastor Adron Modlin officiating. The family received friends one hour prior
to the funeral at the church and other times at the home. Burial was at Woodlawn
Cemetery.
