Magdalene MacTarnaghan Hettler, a long time Snyder resident, died October 25, 2019. Mrs. Hettler grew up in the Village of Castile. She was a 1939 graduate of Smith College, Northampton Mass, and a life member of the alumnae Association of Smith College. She was married to Robert Hettler, A Springfield College graduate, for 64 years. While teaching at the University of Buffalo, she earned her Master’s Degree in mathematics and completed many more hours of mathematics graduate work. She was an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Daemen College, retiring in 1982. A member of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education, Mrs. Hettler was included in Who’s Who of American Women and while at Daemen College, established a scholarship for the teaching of mathematics.
During her career, she also taught mathematics at York NY, Castile NY, Amherst High School, Jacksonville Florida while her husband was stationed there during WW II, and Erie Community College. She was a member of Amherst Community Church and an active member of Group 16. She was also a member of the College Club of Buffalo, Amherst Book Club and the Suburban Women’s Club of Buffalo.
She and her late husband were members of the Silver Lake Country Club for over 50 years, and they enjoyed many golfing vacations in the Caribbean islands. She took many trips to Europe and around the US with her daughter and other family members. She particularly enjoyed decades of summers with her family at Silver Lake, and continued playing golf and boating, including riding their jet ski, until her mid-nineties.
She is survived by Cynthia Hettler Ingerson (Jay), Michael R. (Susan), grandchildren Jennifer and Brian, step grandchildren Amy Vitale and Jay Ingerson Jr., and great granddaughter Willow Daber.
Family and Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the Amherst Community Church 77 Washington Hwy., Amherst NY Friday December 27th at 11:30 am.
