Anthony was born in Ipswich, England in March, 1930. He attended Brentwood School in Essex, followed by Corpus Christi College at Cambridge University, graduating with a degree in Botany and Zoology in 1953. In 1964 he accepted a job transfer to the United States, arriving with his family by steamship (the S.S. France) in New York, and first residing in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. His former company was eventually acquired by the Stepan Company of Northfield, and in 1973 he accepted a transfer to Wilmette, Illinois, where he has resided ever since, also earning an MBA from the University of Chicago School of Business in 1978.
He enjoyed a lifelong love for classical music (with some Gilbert and Sullivan mixed in) as both a performer and audience member. He sang with numerous musical groups, beginning with the Spotlighters while in Massachusetts, and including the North Shore Choral Society (where he also served as President for several years), the Northwestern University Chorus, the Savoyaires, and of course, the choir of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. Following his retirement in 1990, he was able to devote all of his time to music, continuing to sing with multiple groups and adding in the Niles Metropolitan Chorus in his later years. He was also an energetic volunteer for many of the groups he either sang with or supported. If you ever purchased a record or CD of the North Shore Choral Society or the Chicago Philharmonic (formerly Symphony II) in past years, there is a strong chance that Dad wrote, edited and assembled it. If you bought a ticket to a Savoyaires Gilbert and Sullivan performance in the 2000s, Dad was the box office.
Anthony was married to Lesley (Poole) from 1958 until her passing in 2011. He is survived by his sister Mary Green of St. Albans, England; son Andrew (and Gayle) Green; son Paul (and Winifred Tipton) Green and daughter Catherine (and Henry) Eckstein; plus grandchildren Christopher (and Bryanna), Eric and Lindsay Green; Mary Tipton-Green and Amy Eckstein.
Memorial services will be held at Westminster Place in Evanston on Saturday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m., and at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Wilmette on Saturday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad's name may be made to the Music Fund at St. Augustine's Church, North Shore Choral Society or your favorite musical group.
