Christian Vega

Senior Airman Christian Vega, age 29, of Skokie, IL, went home to Jesus peacefully, on Monday, February 19, 2024. He was the beloved first son of Delfino Vega Hernandez and Catalina Vega and is survived by his, siblings David, Katherine, and Madeline Vega, and cherished relatives, including Beatriz Labra, Veronica Vega, Ofelia Chavez, Jose Luis Aguilar, Celia Aguilar, and his adored grandmother, Maria de la Luz Tamayo Santamaria. His many cousins and relatives cherished him. Christian's warmth and love traveled the world, touching the lives of everyone who met him.

From an early age, Christian showed a remarkable sense of determination and confidence. Indisputably, nothing was impossible in his eyes. In high school, he practiced every sport he could, he did track, cross country, soccer, and swimming. He even pursued the arts, and was part of the theater and choir. Showcasing his bold spirit and tenacity.

Following his graduation, Christian embarked on a path of service to his Nation by enlisting in the Air Force in 2013. He wanted to be part of the Pararescue team. He was assigned and trained to work in Air Transport "Port Dawg" at JB-Elmendorf-Richardson Base, Alaska. Christian exhibited dedication and valor in his duties. He won a scholarship, and began his studies as a Medical assistant, However, his path changed when, in 2015, he faced a difficult medical situation. Chrisitan suddenly collapsed at the base and was immediately transported to emergencies at the Hospital Providence in Anchorage. He

suffered a brain aneurysm, and Christian underwent extensive therapy and rehabilitation. Supported by his RCC’s Johnny Hernandez and Jennifer Welch, a compassionate medical team, and his determined family. Christian re-learned how to talk, walk, and eat, thanks to the support of rehabilitation Dr. Marilyn Pacheco MD. Therapists, social workers, unwavering faith in God, and love for life. All guided him through his journey of rehabilitation. Christian was enrolled in the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2). Embracing the start of a new chapter in his life.

Christian discovered a renewed sense of purpose through the Air Force Wounded Warrior Adaptive Sports Program. Attending his first inaugural CARE event in 2016 at Offutt Air Force Base marked the beginning of a remarkable journey of resilience and dedication. His positive attitude and infectious spirit uplifted Air Force staff, coaches, and fellow warriors, inspiring them with his testimony of triumph over adversity.

In 2018, Christian retired from the Air Force due to medical reasons, residing in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Immersing himself into adaptive sports, he participated in the Scott Air Force Base CARE event in 2019, bravely attempting various sports. Running for the first time since his brain aneurysm. Christian's eagerness to share his story of challenges, resilience, and unwavering faith. Led him to becoming an AFW Ambassador. Christian with his life testimony empowered Airmen & Guardians across twenty-one Air Force & Space Force installations. He was invited to speak at over 150 conferences including the honor of speaking at, The Pentagon. Touching the hearts of over 75 thousand individuals. He shared his love for God and reflected it through his testimony and kindness, leaving an undeniable mark on all who heard him speak.

Christian's sincere heartfelt message resonated deeply, earning him accolades such as the Poet Award. “The Poet is a teller of unspoken truths. Whose stories tell of a tragedy that has since been given a voice. A voice of resiliency and conquered darkness. It’s through these truths that they educate the unknowing and awaken the silenced.” Also Receiving the Spirit Award. An award that is given to warriors who embody characteristics of the heart of the lion. Their ability to master opposition while adapting and growing creates a sense of beauty in all moments, no matter how big or small. These awards are a symbol of Christian’s unwavering commitment to teamwork, leadership, and service before self. Throughout his journey, Christian's love for God remained steadfast, guiding him through triumphs and trials alike.

His favorite sports, swimming, track, cycling, shooting, rowing, and sitting volleyball, served as arenas where his faith and resilience shone brightest. Christian's athletic prowess extended to his participation in the Air Force Trials from 2021 to 2023, where he earned an impressive collection of 12 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medals. His dream to represent the Air Force at the Warrior Games became a reality in 2022, He earned Gold medals in swimming 200 Meters Freestyle Relay, Track 100 & 200-meter dashes, Silver in Cycling Time Trial, and two Bronzes in the Cycling Road Race and Swimming 50 Meter Breaststroke. He had the honor to light up the Torch during the Opening Ceremonies at the 2023 Air Force Trials in Las Vegas, NV.

Beyond national borders, Christian proudly represented Team USA at the 2023 Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany. He won gold and silver medals and forged friendships with individuals from 23 nations. He met with notable figures, including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. After the 2023 Invictus Games, Team USA was invited to the white house. They were welcomed by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for representing the USA in the Invictus Games 2023.

When Christian was not traveling and participating in events, at home he was an active member in his local church, University Bible Fellowship. He was a student at Oakton College aspiring to be an X-ray technician. He was the President of the Oakton Mission Bible Club and was in the process of organizing a formal room for the Veterans Club. He also participated in the Warrior Wounded Project, a veterans support group. He was committed to supporting his fellow veterans and fostering bonds of camaraderie and understanding. Christian made friends around the world and inspired all who he met through his incredible love for God, resilience and gratitude for life. Not only did he make friends around the world, his friendships turned into amazing family bonds. Christian remained deeply rooted in his faith and community. He sought to serve and uplift others, embodying the principles of compassion and kindness.

Christian Vega's legacy transcends accolades and achievements, encompassing a profound love for God and humanity. His life exemplified the power of resilience, faith, and service, touching the lives of countless individuals across the globe. As we bid farewell to a beloved son, brother and friend, we honor his memory by carrying forward his spirit of compassion, determination and above all his unwavering faith in God. He will always be remembered and live within our hearts.

Christian desde su temprana edad, mostró un notable sentido de determinación y confianza. Indiscutiblemente, nada era imposible delante de sus ojos. Aprendiendo de nuevo a caminar, hablar y comer, con la asistencia de su Dra. Marilyn Pacheco MD de rehabilitación, sus terapistas, trabajadores sociales, la fe inquebrantable en Dios, el amor a la vida y los cuidados de su Madre, lo guiaron en el camino hacia la recuperación. Sus deportes favoritos fueron la natación, el atletismo, ciclismo, el tiro, remo y voleibol sentado, sirvieron como arenas donde su fe y resiliencia brillaban con más fuerza. La destreza atlética de Christian se extendió a su participación en las Pruebas para formar el equipo de la Fuerza Aérea de 2021 a 2023, donde ganó una impresionante colección de 12 medallas de oro, 2 de plata y 1 de bronce. Su sueño de representar a la Fuerza Aérea en los Juegos de Guerreros se hizo realidad en 2022, donde su espíritu indomable hizo que ganara medallas de oro en natación: relevos de estilo libre de 200 metros, pista: 100 y 200 metros planos, Plata en ciclismo contrarreloj y dos de Bronce en ciclismo en ruta y natación 50 metros. Christian se convirtió en un campeón no solo de su recuperación sino también de los deportes en los que participaba. Tuvo el honor de encender la Antorcha durante la Ceremonia de Apertura en las Pruebas de la Fuerza Aérea de 2023 en Las Vegas, NV.

Más allá de las fronteras nacionales, fue seleccionado para representar con orgullo al equipo de EE.UU en los Juegos de Invictus de 2023, que se llevaron a cabo en Düsseldorf, Alemania. Ganando una medalla de oro y otra de plata, forjando amistades con personas de 23 naciones participantes. Sus encuentros con figuras destacadas, incluidos el Duque y la Duquesa de Sussex, el Príncipe Harry y Meghan Markle. Christian y el equipo de EE.
