Edith Hoyt Ehrensaft, 101, died peacefully in her home May 22, 2021 at Lincolnwood Place in Lincolnwood, Illinois. A devoted wife to her late husband, Morris Ehrensaft, she was also mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rick Ehrensaft and Linda Lofton, daughter and son-in-law, Diane Ehrensaft and Jim Hawley, and son Phil Ehrensaft; grandchildren Miriam Ehrensaft, Esther Ehrensaft, Rebecca Hawley, Jesse Ehrensaft-Hawley, Alie Ehrensaft, and Jenna Ehrensaft; great-grandchildren, Cary Shindell, Oliver Shindell, Leah Shindell, Satya Hawley, Luka Ehrensaft-Oh, and Finn Ehrensaft-Oh, and nephew Bob Hoyt. Edith was an intelligent and resilient woman and passed this down to her family. She had an innate way of talking with others and could gain one's life story in a simple conversation. Those who knew her can attest to this. She was surrounded throughout her entire lifetime with devoted family and friends, including her extended family that emigrated from Russia and took her in as a little girl when her mother was recovering from TB. Her first year of her 79 year marriage to Morry was spent nursing her own mother in her last year of life. She will be missed by all whose life she has touched, but her legacy will carry on in both the values she taught and in the widely disseminated recipe for Edith Ehrensaft's Famous Brisket. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, www.macular.org, or the Skokie Public Library, www.skokielibrary.org/about/donations.
