Edward Goldberg, 85, passed Dec. 26, 2024 at his home in Glencoe IL. He started The Needle’s Excellency together with his wife Amrita Goldberg in 1972. Born in Poland on Feb. 27, 1939, Edward was given for safekeeping by his parents, Daniel and Stephania Goldberg, to an orphanage run by the Sacred Heart nuns in Przemsyl, Poland, when he was barely 4 years old. He never saw them again, as both parents perished during World War II. Eventually he was taken by the Jewish Committee which oversaw the survival of Jewish children. “I always felt loved,” he said of his unusual upbringing.
He arrived in the United States in 1968 and spent some years at the University of Chicago. Edward, a former professor, was a gifted poet and writer. He had a highly developed appreciation for beauty in the written word and visual arts. He was in the process of compiling his writings into a book. He was known for his generosity and a desire to help others, fueled by the many challenges he faced in life. His passing has left a void. He is survived by his wife, Amrita, to whom he was married for 54 years.
