Thinking about you Coach and what an important mentor you were in our lives. I had the privilege of being your student aide at Lake View High School in the 1970’s. You taught us so much. You and your wife Betty became friends for life. Think of you often and the gifts of your friendship throughout the years. You were an inspiration. Thank you for being a compassionate individual. Love always.

Fred will always be remembered as a wonderful and fantastic person!

It's hard to believe that it's  been 4 years since Fred's death and seems like only yeaterday.
Fred and Betty were very close friends of my parents and part of the Guams; a fraternity the guys started in high school. Fred's kindness and encouragement were an influential part of my life. I looked forward to being with Fred and Betty at the IHSA basketball tournament in Champaign and NW basketball games in Evanston. I have abundant fondness and memories.

Always thinking about you Fred. Still say hello as I pass your house on my walks.

It was really an honor for me to have attended the memorial service for Coach Ruben last Sunday ( 02-23-2020).  I have no words to describe what this wonderful person meant to many of us who attended Lake View High School ... He was a great teacher, counselor,  friend... but  most of all, a GREAT HUMAN BEING ... THANK YOU coach !!!  ... We will cherish your memories for ever... RIP !!!

Of all the people in my life, past and present, Coach Ruben influenced me as much as anyone.  After my freshman high school swim season, he gave me a flyer with information about a summer swim program at UIC.  My dad would not pay for it unless I had transportation, so Jim Sencion agreed to drive me (he was a Lake View graduate and a UIC college swimmer).  He drove me once, and then introduced me to Nancy Price, another UIC swimmer.  Nancy and I rode our bikes to UIC every morning that summer.  It was because of Nancy that I met my wife, Cathy, who also swam that same summer at UIC because her swim coach and UIC's swim coach were brothers (she lived on the South Side - how else would we have met?)  43 years later, our family has many memories and experiences tied to Coach.  I returned to Lake View as a teacher and remained there for 20 years.  Our daughter, Courtney, has hand-me-downs from Coach's granddaughter of the same name.  She swam competitively for more than ten years and was a swim coach.  Our younger daughter, Meghan, was a college swimmer at UIC.  I realize that Coach had to sacrifice a significant amount of family time to be a high school counselor and coach, but his positive impact on the lives of others is infinite.

A great and wonderful man has passed from our midst. 
I first met "Uncle Fred" at Decoma Day Camp where I was a junior counselor in the summer of '68. Imagine my surprise when in that September, I saw him walking across the LVHS lunchroom and I hollered out, " Hey Uncle Fred!". A great relationship was formed between coach and athlete. Swimming backstroke under Fred's tutelage, we had a winning season,  and the bond between coach and team has lasted decades. His contributions to LVHS students and alums will never be forgotten, will always be cherished. 
Travel well, Mr Ruben. We will all miss you.

I worked with Fred in the Physical Education and Counseling Departments at Lake View H.S. for over 25 years.  Fred was a good friend and dedicatied colleague. He was a true professional who was willing to do anything that would help the students at Lake View. It was a privilege and honor to work with Fred.  Like everyone who ever met Coach Ruben, I will miss his kindness, dedication to his family, friends and the students who were an important part of lhis life.

I had the privilege of getting to know Coach Ruben after leaving Sullivan. Watching him for six seasons teach and coach freshman and sophomore players about how to conduct themselves on and off the field was a master class in leadership. 
I take great solace in the knowledge that all those he touched during his remarkable life will keep him alive for generations to come. Thanks Coach.

Few people in this world really make a difference. Coach Ruben was someone who did for such a long time. He was always there for everybody and never expected one thing in  return. There are many more good people in this world because of him and his wonderful attitude. It was a privilege coach and I will miss your smile, your laugh and your sense of humor. Rest in peace!  

Myself, like hundreds if not thousands of others,  was touched by Fred's kindness and generous spirit.  Fred was the epitome of decency and  unselfishness as he wholeheartedly dedicated his professional and much of his personal life in helping  others.    As a player on the Sullivan football championship  team that Fred coached I can speak for myself and our team that Fred instilled in all of us a work ethic and set of values that we carried throughout our life.  He was our beloved coach and despite the passage of 40 years his lessons still ring true in our lives.   In addition to his teaching and coaching, Fred led a remarkable life  outside that arena. As a WWII Veteran who was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge in the European Theater Fred was a witness to the most significant trial in history as a guard at the infamous Nuremberg trial.   Despite seeing the horrors of mankind Fred led his life with pure goodness and generosity.  Fred was a wonderful coach, friend, husband father, grandfather and the world lost one of its finest. 

Coach Ruben was, by far, one of the most influential men that ever came into my life. And at a time that many of us needed a person just like him. Thank You Coach for all you did for me and Thank You Coach for all you did for everyone!

Coach Ruben was my counselor and boy did I keep him busy.  He knew my mom on a first name basis.   But through it all he never yelled or got upset with me.  
At the last reunion when I saw him, he asked how Laurie was doing. I can’t believe he remembered my Moms name! 
He was a great man and will be missed 

My heart aches on the passing of such a great man.  Thousands (literally) are mourning the loss of Coach Ruben.  There are not enough words in our vocabulary to describe how much he meant to all of us from Lake View High School as he cared about each and every student.  My deepest sympathies to Betty and their entire family during this most difficult time. Coach will be missed and will forever be loved.  He was a great mentor and friend with a great sense of humor.

Fred was an amazing and loving person. The world is so much better because of Fred’s caring, love and dedication. He will be sorely missed!

You were an inspiration to all of us at Lake View Hs , You cared, you helped, you listened without prejudice. We respected you and looked up to to.  Thank you for being you. RIP Coach Ruben
