Jeffrey S. Lyon, 71, of Deerfield, IL, passed away on December 7, 2020. He was preceded in death by parents Phillip & Betty (nee Foosaner) Lyon, grandparents David & Anne (nee Rosenberg) Lyon and Maurice & Bess (nee Bonic) Foosaner. He is survived by brothers Maury (Susan) and Richard (the late Bailey), sons Andrew and Matthew (Renee), grandsons Matthew and Jaden, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Jeff was never without one of his beloved fountain pens, a handkerchief, or a horribly-great dad joke or pun. Later in life, Jeff added cooking, art shows, and chauffeuring his grandkids to hockey practices to his list of passions. He wholeheartedly embraced his role as doting grandfather. Growing up on the Southeast Side of Chicago, Jeff graduated from Warren Elementary School (’63) and Bowen High School (’67), and was Bar Mitzvahed at Congregation Rodfei Sholom-Oir Chodosh (’62). He then attended Drake University (’71) before earning his J.D. at DePaul University College of Law (’75). In addition to his career as a commercial real estate attorney, Jeff was involved with a variety of community organizations. He served as Past President of the Pinchus Rosenberg Family Society; created The Lyon Foundation; was a member of the boards for School District 67 and Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation, and head coach of the Morton Grove Little League Champion White Sox and Giants. Jeff was an active member of the Morton Grove Action Party and a founding board member of the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM), the latter of which combined his love for community and law as he coauthored a number of bills regarding drunk driving that were passed into law. Over the course of his 45-year career as an attorney, Jeff was a founding partner of Rosenberg & Lyon, LLP, made partner at Shefsky & Froelich Ltd., and became a named partner at Lyon & Caron, LLP. He also served as the prosecutor for the Village of Morton Grove for over 15 years. Jeff will be remembered as “the go-to guy” for sage business or legal advice, a sounding board for any idea, or a proofreader for an essay due in two hours. He was a respected attorney, a wise mentor, a good friend, a little blunt, and very generous. He will be greatly missed by those who had the opportunity to know him. In lieu of flowers, the Lyon family asks that donations be made to WBEZ radio in Chicago (wbez.org), The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (themmrf.org), or your local school library. Out of an abundance of caution for friends and family during this COVID-19 Pandemic, a celebration of Jeffrey’s life will be held at a later date when we can all gather safely.
