Dear Ellen, You have my deepest sympathy, what a great loss for you after 63 years.   I have memories of you and John in London, long ago now.  It was a pleasure keeping in touch over the years and a triumph finally able to visit you in your home in Ash Street.  You had both made such a good life and will be sorely missed by your community I know.  Very much love to you, I am grateful for our long friendship.  I am sure you will be surrounded by friends and family at this time.

John was a great model of service in so many areas of his life.  I am better person for having known J T.

Ellen, I just heard the news from Gill.  Such a long marriage, full of memories.  My memories of John include his being instrumental in wooing Brooks away from P&G to return to CT.   Then there was my total paralysis and fear riding pinion on his motorbike; I'm sure he shooed me off within seconds.  When Sarah was in the hospital for her tonsillectomy in London, I think you came to visit.  We have lost touch over the decades, but you are firmly in my memory.  I think I counted 6 grandchildren and 2 grands who, I'm sure, give you much contentment.  Peace to you and yours.  xx Sandy

I would never have met John if we hadn't been elected to serve on the Winnetka Park Board at the same time.  I had the privilege of sitting next to John for our entire 8 years of service.  Over the course of our term John's diligence, open-mindedness and passion for the community always led us to make thoughtful decisions.  Plus he made me laugh every meeting with his snarky asides mumbled under his breath!
It was an honor to know and serve with John. 


Thank you for all your time at the WYO and with my Mom and Dad, it made a positive impact on all of our lives.  

I served with John over the past five years on The New Trier Township Board of Trustees. John was a mindful and caring public servant, and a champion for the disadvantaged. His wisdom, passion and leadership will be greatly missed by the Board. I only hope that I can be as vibrant, relevant and productive as John was into his mid-80's.  I will miss him.

John faced the vagaries of his senior years in the same straightforward manner he handled his life — head on after consideration of the various outcomes.  I took great joy in watching his thought process.  John cared about Winnetka Youth, the various commissions he chaired, the village board, the park board and his community.  Most of all, he cared about you Ellen as he steered both your ways through medical challenges. I have/had the greatest respect and love for John these last 35 years.  I am sure the angels and saints are sitting a little straighter now that our John has joined them.  With love, Mary Allan

My deepest sympathies to you and all your family.  John was a great mentor and friend.  I have known him from the neighborhood in Winnetka, but my best memories are from morning coffee.  There were usually large groups that met, but I always considered myself lucky to be sitting next to John.  His love for you, the kid and grandkids showed whenever I had a conversation with him.  

John liked to challenge conventional thinking.  He was a deep thinker generally speaking and you better bring your "A" game if you were going to contradict him.  He made me a better person and showed me the blessings of a fruitful life.  May God bless him and you forever.
