Shirley was born on September 27, 1930 to Max and Anna Kasten in Chicago. She attended Roosevelt High School in Albany Park, where she showed prowess in the arts, specifically in painting. She graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago and taught grade school. She met the love of her life of 63 years, David Neems, doing what she loved to do, dancing. They were married on May 3, 1953.
Shirley was a talented oil painter who enjoyed traveling, playing tennis, and mahjong with friends. When her youngest went to school, she enjoyed working at Lord and Taylor in the children's department.
Shirley cherished family time and was known for her cheer and common sense. She had a big smile that lit up around her family and friends. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren in any activity in which they participated, from sporting events to music and dance recitals. Nothing made her happier than having the whole family together for a party or a meal.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Brookdale, and at Glenbrook Hospital for their loving care of Shirley.
Shirley was the beloved wife of the late David; loving mother of Larry Neems (Erica), Janice Carman (Bruce), and Ron Neems (Niki); devoted grandmother of Ricky Neems (Joanna), Drew Neems (Jill), Sophie Neems (Griffin), and Grace Carman; and dearest sister of Estelle Weiss.
