Stanley J. Winton, beloved husband of Leila (nee Fischler) passed away on March 24, 2014. He was devoted father of Diane (Richard) Hanik, Donald Winton, and Laurie Winton Lichko; cherished grandfather of Emily, David and Steven; loving brother of the late Leonard (Elaine, survived) Weinberg and the late Ronnie (the late Martin) Kutik and brother-in-law of Bill (Eileen, survived) Fischler; dear uncle of Michael Kutik, Tracey Fischler, Anthony Fischler, Clinton Fischler and Patrick (Lauren) Fischler; and friend to so many.
Stan served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Corporal in Headquarters and Service Company 1259th Engineer Combat Battalion, from 1943 to 1946. Six weeks after his return to New York, his birthplace and home, he married Leila Fischler, the love of his life, and they shared over 67 years of marriage together prior to his death.
Stan attended Columbia University in New York and completed his education with a B.A. and B.S.I.E in industrial engineering in 1948. His career brought him and his family to Chicago in 1957 to work at Sara Lee Bakery, and he had a successful career there for 22 years. In 1979 he joined Orval Kent as V.P. Operations, and worked there until his retirement in 1990.
In his retirement, Stan pursued his hobbies of stamp collecting, bridge and travel, and moved to the Vi at the Glen retirement community (formerly known as Classic Residence by Hyatt) in 2009, where he was an active member of the community serving on many committees. His time at the Vi surrounded him with many new friends who brought a wonderful final chapter to his life.
Stan’s gentle grace and remarkable intelligence defined who he was. He was a man who cared deeply for his family, his work and the state of the world. In the last several years, Stan developed a plan that he called Four Ponds, a plan to bring peace and economic prosperity to the Middle East. Stan’s wish was to put this plan in front of the right people, those who can take this nugget of an idea and turn it into a reality. For anyone interested in helping bring Four Ponds to life, the details can be found at www.fourponds.org.
“It is easier to lead men to combat, stirring up their passion, than to restrain them and direct them toward the patient labors of peace.”
Andre Gide—French Author, Nobel Prize Winner 1947
