Susan spent her childhood in Chicago with parents Rachel and Alfred Hornstein and brother Barry. She graduated from Francis W. Parker school where she was noted as a bowling enthusiast. Described by friends as a firecracker and someone who lights up a room, Susan was sunshine on a cloudy day, always ready for fun and adventure. She made friends everywhere she went, forging strong bonds over card games, book clubs, day trips, and bingo. She enjoyed travel to destinations near and far, never failing to charm those around her with disarming honesty and a sometimes sly smile.
As a young mother to three children—Sandi (Michael), David (Sherry), and Michael (Kendra)--she had a knack for organizing elaborate theme birthday parties. We may never know what neighborhood parents thought of the Vegas-themed kids' gambling party she and husband Sylvain dreamed up. Her partner for 31 years, Syl was at her side--whether square dancing, traipsing around the country in a motorhome, or jetting off to far-flung destinations.
After Sylvain passed in 1991, Susan found a second chance at love with William Pitzele (d. 2019).
She continued to share her passion for travel and discovery with grandchildren, Stephen, Jessica, Winona, and Jacob, and enjoyed getting to know her step-grandchildren, Natalie and G.
A Lincoln Park Zoo education volunteer for 15 years, Susan gave her time at a number of wildlife and rescue organizations. She was a fan of all things Animal Planet and a doting pet parent to Porkie, Cocky, Tuffy, Alice, and Sweetie.
Susan's joy and enthusiasm for life, friends, and family will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
A memorial service will be held on October 24, 1 PM at the Carrington at Lincolnwood, 3501 Northeast Pkwy, Lincolnwood.
Donations can be made in her name to the Anti-Cruelty Society.
