It is with profound sadness that the family of Joseph Franklin Davis Sr. Age 90, announce his passing on May 13, 2024, in Wilmington, CA. He was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, and Friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Joe was born on May 19, 1933, in Duplin County, North Carolina to Earl Davis and Fannie Lee Casper Davis. He was the third of 4 sons. His 2 older brothers, Junior and Jim, predeceased him. His younger brother, Donald, lives in New Bern NC with his wife, Donna, and family.
Joe grew up a sharecropper's son, working on the farm tending crops such as tobacco, corn, and cotton. He joined the US Navy at the age of 19 in April 1952 and served in Japan for 2 years. He served in Yokosuka and Tokyo. He served on the USS Lyman K. Swenson (DD729) from 11-DEC-1954 to 3-JAN-1956 and transferred to the USS Herbert J. Thomas (DDR833) from 3-JAN-1956 to 25-MAY-1956. He was discharged in Long Beach on 3-JUNE-1956 and served in the Reserves Inactive until 1-JUNE-1960 when he was Honorably discharged.
Joe started his family and worked as a Bill Poster for Foster and Kleiser. He retired in 1994 and spent his days gardening, camping, fishing, going to Las Vegas, and visiting family in North Carolina. His "Golden Years" were spent babysitting his grandchildren with his beloved wife, Barbara. He belonged to the parish of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Wilmington, CA. Since his 2 youngest children attended Saints Peter and Paul school, he happily volunteered to do anything asked of him. His activity in the school and church continued while his daughter's 3 children attended school there as well. Although his wife was an esteemed member of the church and belonged to the Women's Council; he was esteemed as well and was the Women's Council "Mascot". One of his main duties for them was to make his "Navy Coffee" for Sunday Bake Sales!
He is survived by his oldest son, Joseph F. Davis Jr. (Former daughter-in-law, Annette), Their children Nicolette and Bradford and their families; his second son, Robert Earl Davis, (Megan), their son Ryan and Robert's oldest son, Robert Anthony Davis and his family; his third son, Michael Louis Davis (Elisabeth) and her son Christian; and his only daughter, Petra Anne Fletcher (Leonard) and their children, Gianna, Aaron Joseph, and Leah.
A visitation for Joseph will be held Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 6 PM to 9 PM with the rosary starting at 7 PM at 1640 North Avalon Blvd. Wilmington, CA 90744. A funeral mass will occur Friday, May 31, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church, 515 W. Opp St. Wilmington, CA 90744. A graveside service will occur Friday, May 31, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Green Hills Memorial Park 27501 S. Western Ave. Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275. In lieu of flowers, kindly donate in Joe's name to his beloved church, Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
