

He was born in Brooklyn, New York to David and Rose Sherman. At 17, he joined the US Navy and served on the USS Enterprise during WWII. He was a member of the Navy band and while stationed in California he worked writing for radio with such notables as Lionel Barrymore, Larry Gelbhardt and Shirley Temple. He was the recipient of numerous metals of honor, including the WWII Victory Medal. While stationed in California, he met the love of his life, Beverly, whom he married in 1947. Together for 54 years, they raised four daughters, Karen (Bill) Del Purgatorio of Brentwood, CA; Evanne Nielsen (deceased), Alison (Steven) Hertz of Wilmington, NC and DanaWyn (Michael) Roeder of New York City. Bert and Beverly were founding members of the East New York Jewish Center in Brooklyn, and were active members of their community.
In 1995, Bert and Bev moved to Wilmington, NC, a place they both loved and made their final home. Bert established himself within the theater and film communities, writing, acting, and directing. He joined Big Dawg Productions and remained on the Board of Directors for several years. He and Beverly created and performed with the 4B’s (Bill, Bert, Beverly, and Beth) entertaining at convalescent homes throughout the area.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service. The family will receive friends prior to the service time. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
Bert will be missed by all who knew him, especially his daughters, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In his memory, donations may be made to Hospice, The American Heart Foundation or the charity of your choice.
