She was a loving mother, devoted wife, and a true partner to her husband, Richard.
Born on May 9, 1947, in Bronxville, New York, Dale was raised in Atlanta alongside her older sister, Marjorie “Lee” Crawford, and younger brother, George “Sandy” Crawford III. She was the daughter of George Marrow Crawford Jr. and Marjorie “Midge” Hall Crawford, later Silver. All preceded her in death, and their memory remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Dale graduated from Briarcliff High School in 1965 and earned a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Georgia in 1969. She married Richard Lockwood in Atlanta, beginning a life filled with adventure and deep connection. Early in their marriage, they lived in several places, including Germany during Richard’s Army service, where they explored Europe together.
In 1974, while living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, they welcomed their first son, Drew. Four years later, their second son, David, was born in Gretna, Louisiana. The family later lived in Singapore for two years before returning to Louisiana and eventually settling in Wilmington.
Dale built a respected career in Human Resources at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and continued her work after retirement as a contract employee with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; sons Drew (Stacey) and David (Jennifer); granddaughters Olivia, Marianna, and Sophia; beloved nieces and nephews; and her cherished pets Lincoln and Garfield.
A celebration of Dale’s life will be held in the spring, when the azaleas bloom—a season she loved for its beauty and renewal.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina or the Coastal Land Trust in Wilmington.
The family welcomes any thoughts, memories, or reflections you’d like to share about Dale. You may also join the guest list for the spring celebration of her life at:
