

Elizabeth(Betsy) Clarke Lane, 85 of Wilmington passed away Thursday March 1, 2018 in the company of her loving husband. Born August 4, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA. She was the only child of Elizabeth and John Clarke.
Betsy graduated from Lumberton High School and attended St. Mary’s girl’s school before graduating from UNC Chapel Hill with a BA in English in 1954. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Calvin Lee Lane of Wilmington, NC and 2 children, Elizabeth(Beth) Lane (Jamie) of Greensboro and Calvin Lee Lane, Jr. (Lucia) of Charlotte, NC. She has three much loved grandchildren, Cristina Chase, Calvin III, and Margarita (Daisy) of Charlotte.
Betsy taught at Tileston Jr. High School from 1954-55 and at Hope Valley School in Durham for one year. She then taught English at New Hanover High School from 1956-1990. After retirement she continued to substitute teach for fourteen years. There she also served as advisor to the Wildcat Newspaper and Hanoverian Yearbook.
Betsy loved teaching, playing bridge, doing puzzles and traveling.
She was a descendant of Samuel Chase, signer of the Declaration of Independence and a Justice of the Supreme Court appointed by George Washington. She served as president of the Wilmington Women’s Club from 1973-74 and was a member of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and of DAR. She was a member of Cape Fear Country Club since 1969 and Hanover Seaside Club since 1959. And always, she was a proud grandmother of three!
The family will greet friends 11:30 to 12:15 Tuesday March 6, 2018 in the Al Durrance Room, St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1219 Forest Hills Drive Wilmington, NC 28403. Service to follow at St John’s at 12:30. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
As an expression of sympathy, remembrances may be made to St John’s Episcopal Church or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
