LaVerne was born on November 1, 1935 to Averon and Esther Godwin in Johnston County North Carolina.
In 1954 she moved to Topsail Beach, NC, with her parents and siblings. LaVerne's father opened Godwin's New Topsail Market and Sportsman Grill, where she worked until beginning her career at the Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point. After retiring from her career with the US Army Corps of Engineers, LaVerne enjoyed spending time on Ocracoke Island with good friends and her books. LaVerne was a voracious reader and life long learner.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her daughter Kathy, her husband Billy, and brothers: Bill and Jimmy Godwin.
She is survived by her son Wade, sister Janet DelleBuono, granddaughters: Bridget Princiotta and Brittany Hatfield, great grandchildren: Cai, Eden, and Aleea. LaVerne also considers her nephews Dean and Danny, as well as niece Vicki, immediate family and loved everyone who has survived her dearly. LaVerne was a strong and loving person and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
