

Franklin “Frank” Edwin Martin, 86, died peacefully at his home on February 21, 2025. Frank was born in Fayetteville, NC on April 19, 1938, the son of the late Furman Earl Martin and Zula Koonce Martin. Frank was also predeceased by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sandra Guigou Martin, and his brother, Furman Earl Martin, Jr.
Frank grew up in Fayetteville, NC and graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1956. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill in 1960, served in the United States Navy for four years and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill School of Law in 1967. After practicing law in Durham, NC for five years, in 1972, Frank, Sandra and their children moved to Wilmington, NC.
Frank practiced law for over fifty-five years. He was a dedicated attorney, serving his clients well, and was committed to being an advocate for the less fortunate in the community. Frank mentored many younger attorneys during his career.
Frank was active in the community, serving on various boards and committees, and he held volunteer leadership roles with the North Carolina Bar Association. Frank was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Frank was also an avid Carolina fan, joining the Rams Club not long after Carolina won the national championship in 1957. Frank was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. He adored his three grandchildren, rarely missing a school performance or sporting event.
Frank is survived by his son, David G. Martin and wife Shona F. Martin; daughter, Blair C. Martin; grandchildren, William G., Margaret “Mimi” F. and Caroline W.; sister-in-law, Marilee G. Stettler and husband Kenneth O. Stettler; and nieces, Dana French and Andrea Martin.
A reception honoring Frank’s life will be held at Cape Fear Country Club from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025. A private burial will be held at a later date in Valdese, NC, where Frank will be buried next to Sandra.
