

He was born July 5, 1939 in Columbus County, the son of the late John Henry and Lizzie Wilkins Simmons. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Henry Simmons, Jr. and James Warren Simmons.
Herbert is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Crocker Simmons. He is survived by four children: Herbert Bailey Simmons, Jr. (Christina) of Delco, Jerry Dean Simmons (Leslie) of Middlesex, Rachel Simmons Canady of Winnabow, and Timothy Wade Simmons of Wilmington; seven grandchildren: Joshua, Kristen, Randy Jr, Savannah, Lindsey, Gracen, and Cooper; three great-grandchildren: Coltin, Gauge, and Alexander. He is also survived by two brothers: Ray Simmons (Gertrude) of Bolton and Dawson Lee Simmons (Marie) of Bolton; and two sisters: Becky Tilghman (Donnie) of Wilmington and Mary Tilghman (Keith) of Delco. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members who loved him dearly.
Herbert retired from CSX Railroad in 2001 after 34 years of loyal and dedicated service. He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. His fishing boat “Little Angel” was given as a tribute to his grand-daughters who were affectionately nicknamed in the same way as Angel 1, 2, 3, and 4 respective to their birth order. Nicknames were a way he expressed his love and everyone was given one. He loved to plant a garden and was happiest when he was on his tractor. He thrived when he was able to share practical jokes. He enjoyed family gatherings where laughter was abundant and memories were shared.
Herbert was an active member of Center Point Church where he gave his time and talents.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home in Wilmington, NC. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, January 11, 2013 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home in Wilmington, NC. Pastor Allen Gibson will be officiating. Burial will follow at Delco Cemetery in Delco, NC.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Simmons, Bill Simmons, Steve West, Mitchell West, Donnie Tilghman, Jr., and Dawson Lee Simmons, Jr.
