

Howard was born on June 22, 1921 in Bronx, NY, son of the late Ellen Brennan Hogan and William J. Hogan. Our precious “Pops” Hogan died January 11th in the peace & comfort of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Facility.
He was a 1938 graduate of Leanardo High School in New Jersey.
Before joining the Army for WWII Howard worked as an elevator operator for Hogan Realty in New York City.
He served in the United States Army during WWII as the Chief Gunner and Operating Instructor for his assigned 90MM Anti-Aircraft Artillery in Battery D of the 167th AAA Gun Battalion taking down enemy aircraft in the European Theatre. Howard participated in engagements in North Africa, the Middle East, Italy, France, and the Rhineland.
Following his Honorable Discharge in Nov. 1945, Howard pursued a long and dedicated 35 year career with the New York City Newspaper Publishers & Deliverers, including the Herald Tribune, the Journal American, the NY Daily News, and finally the N.Y. Times where he spent most of his career before retiring in 1983.
Including his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ella K. Hogan in 2000; and his brothers Bill, James, Jerry, and his sister Eleanor. He is survived by his step-sons, Dennis B. Kane and his wife, Mary, and John M. Kane and his wife, Anne; his 8 grandchildren, and his 10 great grandchildren, as well as his brother, John Hogan and his wife, Shirley. They and other family members will forever be the benefactors of Howard’s unending love for each of them.
The family will receive friends on Friday 13th, from 6:30 PM to 8:00PM at Coble Ward Smith Funeral Services, 3915 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1011 Eastwood Road, Wilmington, NC 28403 on Saturday, Jan 14, at 11:00 am.
A graveside service with Military Honors will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington, NC 28409.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or St. Mark Catholic Church – School Addition Building Fund at the address above.
