James (Jack) Tyrus Stewart, Jr., 80, of Wilmington, died Friday, October 4th, 2013 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center. Jack was born August 3, 1933 in Erwin, NC. He was the son of the late James T. Stewart, Sr. and Lena Ennis Stewart. Jack graduated valedictorian and president of his high school class. He went on to UNC-Chapel Hill with a ROTC scholarship and graduated with a degree in Economics in 1955. Immediately after, he reported to the United States Marine Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant. While home one weekend, he met his future wife, Sylvia Barbour, and they were married on September 30th, 1956. After a 2-year tour at Camp Pendleton, CA, they spent the next 2 years in the Philippines. Jack and his growing family were transferred to Camp LeJeune after 6 1/2 years in the Corps. Jack resigned his commission and left the Marines at this time. He didn't want to be away from his family and thought it would be nice to pick out his own socks and tie. After a short venture as a civilian, Jack became a Special Agent for the FBI. Unfortunately, he still was unable to pick out the color of his socks and tie and even had to wear a hat as well! During his long career in the FBI, the family lived in Carbondale, IL and Springfield, VA. Later, Jack served first in the Washington Field Office and then the FBI Headquarters. In 1977, Jack was transferred to the FBI Academy in Quantico where he remained until his retirement. During his time in the training division, Jack was promoted to Unit Chief, Section Chief and retired as the Assistant Deputy Director. To be close to family after retirement, which was always most important to Jack, he and Sylvia moved back to NC. They settled in Wilmington where his brother Rick, sister Connie, and parents all resided. They both decided it was the best decision they could have made. Jack worked another 9 years as a VP at Porters Neck Development Company. Jack and Sylvia lived the last 26 years in Wilmington - 20 of those in Porters Neck. Jack is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sylvia, his son, Rus Stewart, two daughters, Kim Stewart Camp and Allison Stewart-Smull, 6 granddaughters, Lauren, Chelsea, Brittany, Claire, Hayley and Rebecca, one grandson, Ryder, a step-grandson, Jake, and his beloved Bichon, Molly. The funeral service will be held at 11am, Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made online or by mail to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
