John Richard Harkey, 76, of Hampstead, NC, died 10/19/14 at his residence. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa on January 29, 1938. Mr. Harkey retired from the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Marine Corps League Detachment 1321 in Hampstead and a member of the American Legion. He was later employed with UNC-W Security and retired from there as well. Surviving is his wife, Devona Ferrell Harkey; two daughters, Pamela Chumley and husband, Lester and Peggy Burwick and husband, Kyle of all of Hampstead; a son, Frank Sipes and wife, Jacqueline of Wilmington; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and a cousin, Norman Morton of Lumberton. His mother, Betty Harkey Kifer preceded him in death. He is to be cremated and a private service will be held at a later date.
