
John Patrick Manley Horton, 76, of Wilmington, died peacefully at his home Novermber 15, 2009. He was born February 24, 1933 in Raleigh, NC the son of the late Walter Lee Horton and Grace. M. Bushee'. John received his undergraduate degree from UNC Chapel Hill in 1958 and continued his graduate studies at NC State University. He enjoyed a lengthy and varied business career, retiring in 2007 as the Director of the Small Business Center at Brunswick Community College. A tireless community servant, John was involved with Hospice of the Lower Cape Fear, SCORE, and St. Mark Roman Catholic Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Barrow Horton in 2003. He is survived by his three children, Kimberly Horton Kelly and husband Robert C. Kelly, Amy Marie Horton, and John Patrick Manley Horton, Jr. Also surviving are his grandchildren, David and Brian Kelly and Curran and Kyle Murphy, a niece Mary Beth Horton Grady, and his loving companion Helen Pate. Known for his love of education, John was a great champion of the community college system. His natural business sense and analytical ability combined with his strength and determination resulted in his being much admired by those whose lives he touched. John faced his many challenges with a positive attitude, sense of humor, and the love of his family and friends. Visitation will be held at Andrews Market Street Chapel on Wednesday, November 18 from 6 to 8 PM. A graveside service will be conducted at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh on Friday, November 20 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1406 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401 or the charity of one's choice.
