

She was born in Chicago, IL on May 30, 1940 to Milton Richard Mellema and Evelyn Rupelt Mellema.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Wm. David Clayton, who currently resides at Cedar Cove Nursing Home in Wilmington, NC; four children, Cindy Poteat of Wilmington; Terry Barnhill of Burgaw; Tracy Mozingo of Green Bay, WI and Mike Alward of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, Michele Klawitter of Fairlawn, VA, Lynn and Ryan Barnhill of Burgaw, Precious Poteat of Castle Hayne, Nathan Mozingo of Madrid, Spain; one great grandson, Jacob Klawitter; one sister, Gail Bradford of Dalton, GA and numerous nieces ,nephews, family and friends and her beloved dog, Buddy, that she loved unconditionally.
Kay was a woman of great faith, strength and generosity.
She was a faithful member of Pine Valley United Methodist Church for 24 years. Kay loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was always ready to share this love with everyone she came in contact with.
A celebration of her life will be held at 12:00pm on Thursday, July 28 2016 at Pine Valley United Methodist Church, located at 3788 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington NC, 28403. A small reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall.
The family would like to thank the staff of Elderhaus Pace for the love, support and care they gave not only to Kay, but to her family, through this difficult time.
Kay’s ashes will be spread in the mountains of Virginia. Please remember Kay with a memorial gift in her name to the Elderhaus Pace Center located at 2220 S. 17th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401 or to The Alzheimer’s Awareness Program of your choice.
