

Maurice Creed Haynes, 88, Army Master Sergeant (Ret) of Wilmington died on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center. He was born in Shelby, NC to Charlie Thomas and Lula May Wilson Haynes on August 1, 1930. At the age of 17 He joined the Army and served his country for 24 years. He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran having been awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, three Air Medals, and multiple other commendations for meritorious service. Following his Army retirement he worked approximately 17 years as maintenance supervisor at Cape Fear Community College until his retirement. He was a devoted husband, loving father and pawpaw whom was always excited to see his children and grandchildren. He loved the mountains and family trips to go see them. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and a devout Christian who loved the Lord.
In addition to his parents Maurice was preceded in death by his wife Annie Louise Freshour Haynes, son-in-law Kim Downing, six brothers, and three sisters.
He is survived by his sons; Mark Haynes and wife Wanda, Keith Haynes and wife Katrina, daughters; Karen Downing, Cynthia Miller and husband Kim. six grandchildren; Steve, Amanda and husband Kelly Fritz, Kristen and husband James Schatzle, Stephanie Miller, Christina and husband Jeremy Ricks, Michelle and husband Petey Potter, four great grandchildren; Landon and Hayden Potter, Wren and Wells Fritz, sister Dorothy Sisk, and brother Larry Haynes.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service and Cremation. The Funeral Service will be held 11am on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Freedom Baptist. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park with full military honors.
