In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Mitchell Simmons, Marcelene Simmons Robertson, Lois Simmons Walker and Kathleen Simmons Edwards.
Mr. Simmons attended Mt. Airy High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He proceeded to Virginia Tech where he played football for the Hokies. Roger earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force. Upon graduation he flew refueling tankers for the strategic Air Command. Upon leaving the Air Force he joined RJ Reynolds Industries in the research and product development of RJR Foods, Inc.
He met and married Mary Elizabeth Redwine and resided in Winston Salem until retirement.
He is survived by his wife Mary Redwine Simmons of the home; nephews: Craig Edwards, Kirk Edwards and Owen Redwine and nieces Enid Butler, Leah Redwine, Susan Geittman and Stephanie Konitz.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2pm on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Wrightsville United Methodist Church with Reverend Doug Lain officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Lifecare.
