Dorothy "Peasy" (Jones) Barnes, a kind-hearted, hard-working, faithful, and generous soul, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on February 27, 1936, Peasy touched the lives of many with her warmth and dedication.
Peasy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Glenwood Barnes; her father, John Daniel "Jack" Jones; her mother, Mattie Sue Edmondson Jones; her brother, Earl (Sonny) Jones; and her sister, Helen J. Bridgers. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Sandra Brantley of Elm City, NC; her nieces, Kathryn Williams of Edenton, NC, and Patty Carter (Ken) of Sunset Beach, NC; her nephew, Rodney Bridgers (Peggy) of Elm City, NC; and her cherished girls, Wanda, Connie, Sharon, and Glenda.
Her life was a testament to community involvement. Peasy owned and operated the neighborhood grocery store, Barnes Grocery, in Elm City, where her girls worked for 18 years. She also started the Pine Tree Kicking clogging club in Elm City and was a devoted member of Pleasant Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she loved attending services. Peasy found joy in bus trips with friends, gardening, especially tending to flowers, and watching hummingbirds.
A visitation will be held at Pleasant Hope Missionary Baptist Church, located at 5018 Rosebud Missionary Baptist Church, Elm City, NC 27822, on January 22, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Following the visitation, a Celebration of Life service will commence at 1:00 pm at the same venue. Peasy will be laid to rest at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 2800 Nash St. N., Wilson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 5018 Rosebud Church Rd., Elm City, NC 27822.

Her gentle spirit and loving nature will be missed by all who knew her.
