Howard Douglas Winstead, Jr., age 67, of Concord, NC, died instantly in a tragic car accident on Saturday, April 11, 2026, while traveling between Band of Oz performances. His passing leaves a tremendous void in the hearts of his wife, family, friends, bandmates, and the countless fans who loved him.
Born on March 26, 1959, in Rocky Mount, NC, Doug’s love for music began at an early age. His mother recognized his natural talent and enrolled him in piano lessons, setting him on a lifelong musical path. In school, he joined the band, mastering trumpet and trombone, and later adding guitar and bass to his repertoire. Doug often joked that he was a “jack of all trades and master of none,” but anyone who heard him sing knew better. “His voice, rich, soulful, unmistakable his, captivated audiences for decades.”
Doug’s performances were more than shows; they were experiences. His energy, charisma, and enthusiasm for life radiated from the stage. Before each performance, he was available to speak with fans one-on-one, always thanking them for coming, always making each person feel special. Those who knew him would say the thanks belonged to Doug, for sharing his gifts so generously, for bringing joy wherever he went, for the smile that lit up every stage and room he entered. His songs will continue to echo in the hearts of all who loved him.
A gifted songwriter, Doug’s passion for creating music was rewarded in 2021 when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Songwriter of the Year nominee, an honor he treasured.
Doug also poured his talents into helping his wife of 20 years, Deanna Connell Winstead, with her business, The Lakes: A Wedding and Party Place. His musical abilities, paired with skill in landscaping, made him an invaluable partner in creating beautiful, memorable events for others.
At just eighteen, Doug followed his passion and launched his musical career. Over the years, he performed with many shag bands, including:
• Coco Loco Party Band
• Fantastic Shakers
• The Blackwater Band
• The Band of Oz, where he was a proud and current member.
