Earl Cox

Mr. John Earl Cox, age 89 of Bogart, GA, passed away on October 20, 2023. Earl was born in Walton County and was a graduate of Bogart High School. For many years, he was a member of Living Word Baptist Church in Bogart. He was a farmer who raised cattle, horses, and beagles for hunting. He enjoyed hunting rabbits and he loved trading guns. He was a country music fan and especially liked Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, and George Jones. He also enjoyed Irish Country Music. He loved being with his family and his many friends and he was very social and he enjoyed telling jokes. He loved his dog, “Toby”, and he really loved homemade vanilla ice cream.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Holloway Cox and Carl Hampton Cox, and his wife of 61 years, Sue Cox. He was also predeceased by his son, John Michael Cox, and his brothers: C.H. Cox, Julian Cox, Clarence Cox, Vivian Cox, Kenneth Cox and Ed Cox. Earl is survived by his children: James Mercer (Christy) Cox, Jerrett Scott (Teresa) Cox, and Donna Claire McElhannon. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Shane Cox, Brian Cox, Haley Parton, Kayla McElhannon, Cody McElhannon, Lawrence Cox, Rosa Cox, Anna Cox, Allie Cox and Amber Mason; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday evening, October 22 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Smith Funeral Home, 755 Atlanta Hwy SE, Winder. The Funeral Service will be on Monday, October 23 at 1:00 pm in Smith Memory Chapel and the burial will follow at Barrow Memorial Gardens.
