Hi Appling, it’s 2024 now and I have a son who would think you are so cool. Miss you tons. Thanks for teaching and dealing with us all those years. I’d do anything to be sitting in your classroom being taught by you again!

Randomly thought of you today. Easily the greatest teacher I ever had. High school sucked for me; life in general just sucked at that time, and you were a bright light in my darkness. Some days, you were the only reason I could muster up the strength to get out of bed. I’d get so excited to go to your classroom, listen to your unique way of teaching, laugh at your hilarious and very dry sense of humor. We’d bond over video games and Johnny Cash. You were such a special human being. Gone far too soon. My heart goes out to your loved ones. May you rest in eternal peace, App. 

I had the opportunity to work with Jason at Uncle Vitos NY pizza. He was traveling to the southside to work in schools down there for his first teaching job. What a great guy with a  huge heart. He always made me laugh. Godspeed man!

Marsha and I were Jasons neighbors on the other side of Sue James.   I was most impressed by his literary knowledge and how it related to current events, his relationship with his lambs, and his love of animals, especially snakes.  He named 'murder hill' where we killed hogs and roasted them at night, rain or shine.

We took over the cul de sac for Halloween and 4th of July parties, and his clown costume was superb, designed to scare the hell out of the kiddies and their parents.  He was a character, for people that love characters.  Jason, you will be missed.  Visit whenever you like.

Living next to Jason and Kristy for the better part of 16 years, you could imagine that the amount of memories are massive. From snowball fights and fireworks to Halloween shenanigans, truly some of the best times of my life. My granddaughters adored you Jason, and Ava was even inspired by you to become a teacher.
 Your kindness and non judgemental personality are an inspiration to us all and we will cherish our time with you always.

You don't know pain till you lost someone who you thought would be here longer than you and if you decided to stay they would be able to at least see you fall in love and get married. In a world of give and take all you did was give. You gave me guidance and more than a second chance you allowed me to express myself with no judgement. You taught me more about myself than I knew about myself. You taught me that nothing matters if you don’t impact the people around you. And that you did sir yes indeed you did. My last day at Collins hill I told you I was gonna make you proud of being my teacher and you said that if I walked out of the school   Went to sleep and woke up the next day you were already proud. I remember dreading having my lacrosse coach as my teacher, one slip up in class would lead to bear crawls, the punishment of choice. My mind was changed when he that me taught me that American literature is great, Scrabble is more about luck and having a dictionary handy, and most importantly Ernest Hemingway describe the only way to be a true man. I will miss you Old Man, you inspired me to be a better person and taught me to not judge someone by how they look but how they judge books and act as a human.

Carolyn, my deepest condolences to you and the family.  When I became acquainted with Jason 25 years ago and didn’t know him for very long I knew he would be an excellent teacher.  And indeed he was as evidenced by the memorials stated here.  I know your heart is broken but hang on to your beautiful memories and sometime soon they will make you smile.  I am praying for that.

App was the teacher I told all my senior year boy problems to, talked abt metal music with, and went to for life advice, I remember telling him about how my boyfriend at the time was tallker than him and he'd always say "yeah okay, in your dreams lex!" Until senior prom, where he was very suprised about being eye to eye with him. 
 Another thing that really stuck with me about Appling, was how much he genuinely cared about his students, he'd always make sure we were set up for success, and weren't too freaked out about the future infront of us. Appling was the one who really set the principal of "don't worry about what other people think of you, because you're you for a reason" in me for years now.  
 I'm also extremely thankful that I suprisingly ran into App on Friday the 1st, he told me: "You seem to have a few more tattoos than the last time i saw you" then proceeded to give me a fist bump, saying they look sick. I'm always gonna remember that last conversation with him, as i'm sure everyone is going to remember theirs, App was such a key part of the CHHS community, and we're all going to miss him dearly. I know hes up there rocking out with Lemmy though! Love you forever App. 🤘🏻❤

I remember having Appling as my English teacher at Riverdale in the late 90s. I believe I was one of his first classes as a new teacher. He was definitely my favorite and most memorable teacher.

I remember his love of the People's Champion and Dolemite. He would have bonus questions on his tests from the "World of Appling." I remember his super interactive lessons that would get the entire class excited and involved ad learning. Most of all, I remember that he was kind, and passionate about reaching his students.

The world is lesser for his absence.

My sincere condolences to the Appling family for your loss. App meant so much to so many , especially my son, Bruce.
 I will be forever grateful to him always willingly sharing his time, knowledge, and wisdom.

App meant the absolute world to me and I’m not sure if he even knew it. Seeing him everyday and writing to him about my fears, dreams, and everything in between was my outlet in high school. He read everyone and was always there for me. He never judged me, he never said anything negative about anything I’d been through, he was just there if I ever wanted someone to talk to. I will never forget walking up to him at prom and giving him the biggest hug. He’s the only teacher I made sure to say hi to. He made such a huge impact on where I am today, and for that I am eternally grateful. I send my deepest condolences to his family and beautiful wife. He is gone, but will never be forgotten. The impact he made on all of his students was unlike any other teacher I’ve ever met. He is so so missed. ❤️

App, that’s what I called him. He was more than a language arts teacher, he changed lives and made people feel seen, heard, and loved. He had a funny way of showing his love and concern but it was definitely felt. 
Appling frequently would have us write essays on Friday about whatever we wanted. 

He would read them all, and give us a place to talk and be seen and heard. 

I often times wrote about my fears of college, my boy issues, dad issues, all of that… 

And every time it was something upsetting. Appling pulled me aside and let me open up and talk to him about it all. 

As a senior in his class I would skip lunch and go to cfa and he never got upset with me as long as I brought Him back a milkshake, nothing else… just that. 

I brought my son to see him multiple times and each time my son took to him like he was family, because he was. 

Appling changed my view on life, college, and the future. He gave us a chance to have a true “senior life class”. The books we read were life changing, the laughs we shared were amazing and the impact he had on my life and everyone else’s will never be forgotten. 

To “lil mama” as he called his beautiful wife, we love you and are praying for you. You and I have never met but your still family and I always adored the way he talked about you and the way he loved you. I hope to have a love like that one day. 

Rest In Peace Appling, we will always love you. 

Our  deepest sympathies to the family. Coach Appling was a wonderful mentor to our son during high school. May his memory be a blessing to all who were fortunate to have known him.
