Martha Abernathy

Martha Abernathy, 95 of Winder, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025. Martha was a native of McIntyre, GA and a graduate of Wilkerson County High School and Berry College in Rome. She was a banker and retired from both The Peoples Bank and The Bank of Barrow. Martha was a faithful member of The Winder First Baptist Church since 1959, she loved her community and volunteered for many roles throughout her lifetime, from volunteering at the hospital gift shop, being president of the ladies auxiliary of the little league and being a member of The Winder Lions Club Ladies Auxiliary.

Martha was preceded by her parents, George and Lucille Swan Bentley; her husband, Ray Abernathy; a son, Jerry Abernathy; her brothers, Linburg, George Jr. and Bill Bentley and a sister, Ella Banks. She is survived by her son, Mike Abernathy of Athens; daughter-in-law, Susan Abernathy; grandchildren, Kyle Abernathy (Kayla) and Erin Thazhmon (Dileep) and great-granddaughter, Sophia Thazhmon.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 6:30 pm at Smith Funeral Home, Winder, GA , Monday, March 3, 2025. Funeral services will be held at 2PM Tuesday, March 4, 2025 in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home, with Pastor Gordon Robinson officiating. Interment will follow in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
