
Mary McCollum Garrett, age 85, formerly of Columbus, GA, died September 13, 2012. Mary and her husband, the late Reverend James L. Garrett, devoted many years to mission work in Brazil. They also owned and operated “The Amazon Cove”, a Christian bookstore in Columbus, GA. Mary received her master’s degree in education from Georgia State University and taught elementary school in the Columbus, GA area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend James L. Garrett, her parents, John B. and Florrie Coffin McCollum, and her sister, Belle Pennington. Mary is survived by two sons, David Garrett of Louisville, KY and John Garrett of Sterling, VA; two daughters, Mary Alice Woods (John) of Eufala, AL and Beth Lucoveic of Altamonte Springs, FL; a sister, Sammy Johnson of Phenix City, AL; four grandchildren, Mary Jo Kovacs, Donna Hooper, David Garrett, and Mary Lee Garrett; and two great grandchildren, Christian and Isabelle Hooper. A visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home, Winder, GA, from 9 until 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 prior to the service. A graveside service will follow at Barrow Memorial Gardens, Winder, GA, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in support of continued mission work in equatorial Brazil.
