
September 17, 2017. He died at home from complications of a stroke with family present at his
bedside. Mr. Obenchain, known by friends and family as Tom, was the 5th of nine children born
to the late Artie Lorain and Violet Josephine Isaacson Obenchain.
Tom was born May 1, 1928 in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. He studied engineering and
graduated from Oregon State University in 1950. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service during
high school and college and loved the mountains of Idaho and Colorado. He married the late
Esther Mae Spencer in 1950. After Esther’s passing in 1990, Tom married Lethia Gail Arrowood
in August of 1992. Tom served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He worked for
Schlumberger Limited, an oilfield services company. After retirement, Tom served as a worker
in the Denver, Colorado LDS temple and as a sealer in the Atlanta, Georgia LDS temple.
Tom was preceded in death by his first wife Esther, his daughter Julia Dianna Griffin, and his
brothers Carl Franklin Obenchain and Daniel James Artie Obenchain. He is survived by his
second wife Lethia; his daughters Valerie Lynne Garfield, Celeste Marie Obenchain, Annie
Elizabeth Pickett, and Kathleen Julia Griffin; his sons, Thomas James Obenchain and Frederick
S. Griffin; his sisters, Madeleine Alice Lydia Rath, Betty Delight Violet Brislain, Constance Artine
Dick, and June Kathryn Keithly; and his brothers Phillip Albin Lorain Obenchain and Theodore
Guy Obenchain. Tom had 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 22, 2017 at 12:00 pm at the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Flowery Branch, GA. The family will receive friends prior to the
service from 10:00 - 11:30 am at the church. A graveside service will be held at Olinger Chapel
Hill Cemetery, in Centennial, CO on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 11:00 am prior to the
interment.
