I feel so privileged to have seen her a few days before. I picked up Mary on my way to Windsor for our friend Mark's funeral and we made a stop in Leamington. Had a wee cup of tea and cookies and a wonderful visit. Maggie was a great friend of my whole family. She has always been like a second mom from that day in July of 1961 when we moved to Lincoln Rd. Rest in peace Maggie -

We were heart broken to learn of Aunt Maggie's death; may she rest in peace.
We were so glad that we had an opportunity to visit her last Jan.in Mary's home. She was in teriffic form then. We always loved her company and treasure our memories of our times spent together both in Ontario and here in Ireland.We had a Mass said in the Dominican Church in Newry last week for her. Dear Kathy and family,
Just getting to the papers after a busy holiday season and reading of your dear Mom's passing; disappointed, therefore, that  I did not make visitation or the service. And shocked as well to see you and the children have lost Fran at such a young age.  Many happy memories of our years as neighbors on Lincoln Road with young families.  I would love to hear back from you, if you're interested,. Again, condolences to your whole family on the loss of such a special lady. ?

I too have fond memories of sipping a wee cup of tea with Grandma McShane, while enjoying her witty humour. She was charming and sweet. You have my sympathy.

My deepest condolences go out to the entire McShane family.  Margaret was wonderful friend to our family for over 60 years and she will be greatly missed.  She was one of the kindest and most caring persons I have ever met and her compassion for others was truly unmatched.  I remember many great times visiting with her at her home on Lincoln Ave. in Windsor with my Parents and Grandfather Ted Hickey.  Her positive outlook and sense of humor always left one feeling upbeat and that that “things were going to be ok”.  No matter what, she had a real ability to look for the good in others and to show that she cared.  

I will never forget Margaret and she was truly one of the very best people I will ever know.

The Ellingwood family owes such a debt of gratitude to Margaret. She cared for our parents, George and Irene, for many years.  Her hard work, constant good humor and endless stories enabled our parents to remain in their home for years after their health failed.  She is surely among the angels now, but that will be familiar territory to her, because that's what she always was.

To the mcShane family my deepest condolences from the bottom of my heart , some of my fondest memories as a child was the warm cup of tea and biscuit we shared at the kitchen table , my whole family was blessed growing up in the neighbourhood and having the warmth love Witt and wisdom from your loving Mom , as we grow older those memories became the delicate treasured linings of our heart , and when we die the lining we treasure will forever live with those we loved .Apart of her heart touched so many as her kitchen was served tea never ending pot with Maggie's love,once served a cup you were forever changed blessed with her touch and grace .Bernie the Glendon girls adopted you without a choice , to the McShane ladies you all have a special sparkle of your Moms beauty , sparkle today so proudly for her , may our tea cups hold a memory knowing how graciously your Mom was loved . Two parts of my life were spent on both sides of Mag's Lincoln Road house but it is the second time that provokes one of my most cherished memories of Mag. In 1979, my husband Jim and I bought our first home which returned me to the Lincoln Road neighbourhood where I spend most of my childhood years. I am sure part of the appeal to my husband in moving to this location was to enjoy the neighbourly attentions of Mag who he already adored, her soda bread, her kitchen table, the twinkle in her eye, and her incredibly positive disposition. I was soon to find out that perhaps this was part of the appeal for me as well. 
Our location was highly advantageous, we were the lucky recipients of Mag's most gracious invites, we enjoyed our inclusion to no end, how lucky we were to be included. It was also during this time that we struggled with medical issues that would prevent us from being parents. After each surgery, Mag who was never an intrusive woman would simply pat my arm and tell me her most famous saying "What is ahead of you, won't go by you" and told me surely that meant we would be parents one day. A few more years passed, we made applesauce together, Jim got socks from Mag every Xmas, and we continued to enjoy the remarkable kindness of our Irish neighbour who by that time I considered a second mother. This became more apparent when I became pregnant in 1981 and this part will always be what I remember most about Mag.
I could never tell you why I did this, or even if I should have but Mary can back me up on this story as she was there as well. When I think of this time now, years later, I am astounded that Mag (or Mary) did not roll their eyes when answering the door, drop some hint that I was expecting too much from Mag's generosity.  But they never did, for weeks on end, maybe it was months. During those winter months while I was expecting, I would make Jim dinner, let him settle in to some good TV, then simply walk next door, open the screen door, knock on the glass and spend the evening with Mag and Mary. When I think of this years later, I relize that I think Mag was more than generous, I think she was remarkably intuitive to people's needs. I know she knew that there was great comfort in sharing a cup of tea and an "orange Xmas cookie" and that this simple pleasure was often all that people needed who knocked on her door. In the spring and summer of 1982, our newborn son Austin and Mag's new grandson Brendan spent many an hour napping in Mag's backyard. Years later, our son took his girlfriend over to Grandma Mags as he always called her on a last-minute whim, she welcomed them in, sat them in her kitchen, showed them how to make soda bread at his mention, baked it, then sent them home with the remaining pieces. He loved this about her, loved being in her company that afternoon. Whenever he mentions that day and how he loved spending time with Mag.  I always think "so did I, so did I..........and didn't we all just love to be with Mag?"

My sympathy to the the McShane family.  Have very fond memories of visiting your mother, when I was young, with my parents ( Wilfred & Phyllis Langlois ). My family and I met Maggie McShane in 1994 at a Mother's Day celebration in Bernie and Bette's back yard; over the years it was always a pleasure to ‘catch up' with her on several other family occasions. She had a strong but gentle personality befitting the Matriarch of a devoted Irish heritage.  Maggie was always a sweet and gracious little lady who loved her family and grandchildren and the good friends that surrounded her.  Subsequently, whenever I heard the song “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”, Maggie McShane's sweet little face would come to my mind because she owned that “lilt of Irish laughter” and her smile always stole your heart away.  

We are so sorry that distance will not allow us to join in the celebration of Maggie's life.  Our heartfelt blessings and sympathy go out to Bernie, Bette, Sean, Matthew, Kyle and their families.  To Mary, Bridget, Kathy and Eileen, our thoughts are with each of you during your time of sorrow.  May the pain in your hearts follow your mother's path to love and goodness always.

Our deepest condolences to all. We had the privilege to meet Margaret when Mom became her dinner companion at the Mennonite Home. We spent countless hours discussing her wonderful family, her life in Ireland, her experiences when she first came to Canada…we simply just fell in lover with her. Margaret will always hold a very very special place in our heart. She was a wonderful conversationalist and mom enjoyed her company immensely. I will miss Margaret very much.  She was kindness itself, always so welcoming, always bustling around her kitchen to make someone a cup of tea and to cut a slice of her soda bread.  Her command of the English language was on par -- at least in my mind -- with Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward.  There was no  one-word answer to the question, "How are you today, Margaret?"  One of the best I received was: "Ah, sure, the devil wouldn't kill a bad thing." 

In 1995, I was lucky enough to visit Margaret at her childhood home in Northern Ireland.  She told stories of her father -- the time he commented on her, supposedly, large feet, saying, "Margaret, you've got a great grip of the ground."

Touring Belfast with Margaret was like doing the Dublin Walk with Jonathan Swift.

At one point, while doing a tour of Catholic shrines along the countryside, Margaret's brother put the car in gear as she was still getting into the vehicle, and managed to run over her foot.  Margaret was more startled than injured, letting loose a string of holy invocations that no doubt lit up the switchboard in heaven.  I'm sure Jesus Christ and the Almighty had no idea there were so many variations on their names. 

Among her other assorted witicisms, I recall Margaret telling me: "Ireland was Ireland when England was just a pup.  And Ireland will still be Ireland when it's all buggered up."

And: "The Irish gave the bagpipes to the Scottish and they still haven't figured them out."

Margaret was a very good friend to me and I will miss her very, very much.

As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings happy death. There was never a finer moment in life than sharing a pot of tea in the kitchen of Mrs. McShane.

Grief can be so hard during the holidays, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one this holiday season.

My deepest sympathies to Bernie and the McShane family. Being a friend of Bernie's and hearing the stories about his mom you could tell she was a wonderful woman and mother and was deeply loved. The world could use more people like her.
