Jaleel Abdul Mustapha (also known as Jay, Robo, Dad, Grandpa) passed away on the morning of December 25, 2024. Jaleel was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, son, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy; his two children, Shareef and Aneesa; his granddaughters, Lyric and Olivia; and his brothers, Imtiaz and Nassar. He is predeceased by his parents, Ashraff and Jinette, and his siblings, Majeed, Waheed, Rahman, Karl, Hanifa, Khadija, and Albeeda.
Jaleel was born on January 7, 1942, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and grew up in the city of San Juan. In the early 1960s, he migrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, with several of his brothers to pursue his education. A former math teacher in Trinidad, Jaleel continued along that path by earning degrees from both the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, graduating with honours and later obtaining his CPA certification. It was during his time in school that he met and fell in love with his wife, Judy.
After a brief period with Price Waterhouse Coopers, Jaleel made the bold decision to take control of his career, so he could spend more time with his children. He left Price Waterhouse to build his own successful Chartered Accountant practice, which he ran for over 25 years alongside his wife, who was by his side in the office every day until their retirement in 2007.
Outside of his professional life, Jaleel was a passionate gardener, taking great pride in growing the biggest tomatoes, the longest zucchinis, and the most beautiful roses. He enjoyed watching sports with his daughter, golfing, and socializing with his fellow members of the Caritoba Golf Club. He cherished the annual group trips to tropical destinations with his close friends.
Jaleel was known for his infectious sense of humour, unwavering kindness, and deep love for his family. His ability to tell a great story, his weekends spent golfing and celebrating with friends, and his warm, welcoming nature made everyone feel at home.
Jaleel’s energy, wit, humour, and boundless kindness will be greatly missed. The gifts he leaves behind, not only in his children and grandchildren, but in everyone lucky enough to have known him, will continue to resonate for generations to come.
A memorial service to celebrate Jaleel Abdul Mustapha’s life will be held on January 11, 2025, at 10:00 am at Thomson “In The Park” Funeral Home & Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, MB. Family and friends are invited to join in remembrance and share stories of a life well lived.
A private cremation will follow the ceremony for immediate family only.
