Allan Lahure - Hᐃᖅᖁᒡᒍᔪᖅ
Family and friends alike are gutted at the sudden loss of Allan Lahure of Baker Lake, Nunavut, and of Winnipeg, on Friday, 29 May 2026 at the age of 78. This kind, generous, larger-than-life man never gave less than 150% to any task he undertook, to any job he did, to any meal he cooked, to any close relationship.
Al was born 25 September 1947 to George and Evelyn Lahure, and grew up in Roseisle, Manitoba on the family farm with his younger sister Marlene. His love of carpentry and construction was a gift from his father. His love of gardening, a gift from his uncle William Bisset. His love of dogs was begun by the dogs themselves who claimed him as their own from early childhood.
In addition to his parents, and their numerous Lahure and Bisset siblings, Al was predeceased in 2015 by Joyce Tait, his wife, confidante and business partner of 41 years. In 2025, he and the family were devastated at the loss of his grandson Joshua Hiqqugujuq Qiyuk in Ottawa.
Al will be sorely missed by his partner Arden Ogg and their dog, Esker. By his children, Stephanie Tait, Quentin Lahure, Christopher and Daisy Lahure, William Lahure and Jason Shingoose. By his grandchildren, Stuart and Curtis Qiyuk, Logan Ungungai Lahure and Lucy Hallett. Also by Arden’s sons, Jesse and Thomas Nordien. Al is also survived by his dear sister and brother-in-law Marlene and Camille Roy, along with their family, a host of Lahure and Bisset cousins, and Joyce’s large, extended Sasakamoose family at Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.
Al chose a life for himself and his family in the north, beginning in Churchill, Manitoba, where he ran the prefab housing plant in the 1970s, leveraging his Red River Trades Training certificate through his great mentor Vic Schroeder with the Schreyer government. In the 1980s, he moved to Baker Lake, Nunavut. There he began renovating a handful of homes in poor condition into solid, livable family homes, and really, literally, never stopped. Making life better for those around him was a calling he lived until the very last. Through Baker Lake Contracting and Supplies (BLCS Ltd.), the business he and Joyce built together, he had a hand in the construction or renovation of most of the hamlet of Baker Lake, and had personally supervised construction of some of its most significant buildings.
His business family, staff and the community of Baker Lake will also miss him dearly, especially Manny and Grace Soares, Todd and Jenesta Dove, Martin and Gail Hak, and Ken and Rayla Bouska, along with many Baker Lakers whose work life was launched at BLCS, and those who have come from far away to offer their service to the community of Baker Lake.
Al Lahure: we have been deeply blessed by your presence in our lives. The world will never see another you.
