Anton leaves to cherish his memory, his son Chris (Anton, Stephanie, Shannon and Michael and three great grandchildren, Lauchlin, Michaela and Keana), son Ken (Kayla and John and Kristen), daughter Janet (Randi and Gareth, Don and Carrie) and daughter Judith (Kevin) along with numerous nieces and nephews across our great land.
Dad is predeceased by his wife Edith, his parents Mortine and Hans Christian along with four sisters, Marie, Anne, Magda and Timmey and two brothers Lauritz and Chris.
Anton was born, January 17th, 1923 in Moosehorn, Manitoba where he went to school until grade 8 helping on the farm with his parents, brothers and sisters and doing odd jobs until he joined the Canadian Army in 1943.
While with the Canadian Army, Dad took his basic training in Winnipeg at Fort Osborne before being assigned to the Essex Scottish Regiment (after Dieppe raid) out of Windsor, Ontario in early 1944 and then sent overseas to Great Britain to join in the great crusade, Operation Overlord in June of 1944. In Europe, Dad was wounded in action, however he returned to the front lines and pushed on to help liberate the countries of France, Belgium and Netherlands during 1944 and 1945. Once hostilities ceased Dad was assigned to occupation duty with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in occupied northern Germany.
When discharged from the army in 1946 Anton went to work back in Moosehorn until the bright lights of Winnipeg lured him and he opened up a vacuum sales and service shop on the corner of Osborne and Corydon, now known as confusion corner. After several years of doing his own thing Dad joined Grant’s Brewery in 1954, which later turned into O’Keefe Brewery (Stadacona and Talbot), after Carling Breweries bought O’Keefe, Dad moved to Carlings on Redwood and ended his work career with Molson Breweries in 1988, with 34 years of service.
Dad had many hobbies, most of which revolved around fixing, tinkering and repairing almost everything and anything. He was also a very enthusiastic cribbage player, an avid curler most of his adult life (lifetime member, Prince Edward Legion Curling Club). He also donated the Manitoba championship trophy to the Manitoba Stick Curling Association. He belonged to various service, community clubs and associations throughout his lifetime such as Royal Canadian Legion, Prince Edward Branch #81, Essex & Kent Scottish Association, East End Barons CC, Stead Seniors (life member), Grand Marais Seniors, Grand Marais Recreation. In his spare time Pop’s enjoyed his watching of sporting events on television, especially Curling, as well as being an avid supporter of the Blue Jays, along with watching our local sports teams, the Jets, Blue Bombers and Goldeyes. He was also very fond of wildlife, nature and gardening and spent many hours walking down the trails he made in the bush around his residence in Lakeshore Heights, just south of Grand Marais, planting his garden and leaving out food for the deer and other wildlife in the area.
The service for Anton will be held Thursday, November 5, 2015, 2:00 p.m. at Klassen Funeral Home.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the nurses and doctors of Concordia Hospital, Oncology Department South team for looking after Dad. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice in Dad’s name.
