With deep sorrow, the sudden passing of Dave Torz has left his family and friends in profound sadness.
He was predeceased by his mother, Sharon Lynne (Bailey) Torz and step-mothers Linda and Sharon Torz. Dave leaves to mourn, his wife Shelley (Knook) and two amazing sons Rylan and Keon, to which Dave was completely devoted to. Dave is survived by his father, Edmond Torz, his brother Jim and step-siblings Kristi and Jeff (Jen). Along with his large “Knook” family; Clasina (Richard), Linda (Brent), Vivian (Ron) and Robert (Wanda) and many nieces and nephews.
Dave made many close connections and life-long friendships throughout his life with his sports affiliates. Volleyball was a lifelong passion and interest; as a team member (setter for life), spectator, and supporter of 204 - as his sons pursued this passion. In keeping to his commitment and support, he also dove into ‘the hockey world” in Fort Garry, attending all the boys’ games and practices.
Dave grew up in Winnipeg, in St. James. He spent much time in the company of Grandma & Grandpa Bailey, to which he had many cherished memories. After graduating from John Taylor High School, he pursued Power Engineering and had a 29-year career at the University of Winnipeg. He joined the U of W Recreation & Athletics Department in 1992. Dave advanced in his career with his characteristic hard work, determination, and dedication, becoming the university’s Chief Engineer.
Dave & Shelley met in 2000 at the U of W. His hallway walk-bys and lingering was not lost on Shelley. Thankfully for her take charge approach, this resulted in a loving 18-year partnership, full of support, love & friendship. There was never a day his family did not feel his love, commitment, and support. He was the ultimate role model.
Dave’s nature was quiet, humble, methodical, thoughtful and reflective. Although he also had a competitive spirit, it was his self-driven disposition and curiosity to “figure things out” that lead to his interest in home renovations and wood working. Everything Dave undertook entailed meticulous plans and execution. Never boastful and quick to start on the next project.
A life ended too soon, was filled with family, friends and experiences. Shelley & Dave were the ultimate hosts of crowds, big or small. Family celebrations, Canada Day parties, pool parties, and countless hockey parent parties. They had a knack for bringing people together and making them feel at ease in their family home.
Dave’s furry pal, Archie, was a great recent addition to their family. Archie quickly claimed Dave as “his person”. In keeping, Dave dutifully committed himself to this new family member, enjoying their daily walks and endless playtime.
