Dode was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Lena along with brothers Gerald, Alex and Ivan.
Dode was born in Winnipeg “100 years ago,” after her parents moved to Canada from Jamaica in the early 1900’s, first settling in Brandon then moving permanently to Winnipeg. Dode grew up in East Kildonan, residing at 210 Trent Avenue for nearly 80 years. Dode had a special love for her mother, looking after her for years in their home on Trent. Dode and Grandma invested their lives in family, friends and neighbours with an open door and a cup of tea waiting for anyone who crossed their threshold.
Dode was a lifetime member of Calvary Temple serving as a Sunday School teacher for 60 years, active as a Crusader leader, Business Girls and Single Adults ministry leader. For years, each summer, Dode would be found serving at Calvary Temple Red Rock camp, entertaining and impacting the lives of both campers and staff alike, with her mischief and joy of life. Dode was also a wonderful pianist, serving in her church, the Lighthouse Mission, and accompanist for the Keenagers Choir, made up of close to sixty seniors, ministering at personal care homes, song festivals and other churches for many years. Another personal joy was playing the piano in the Hart household, where music was a main part of the family fabric. Wonderful meals and evenings always ended by gathering around the piano for hours, while Dode often accompanied brother Alex as he led everyone in song with his bass baritone voice.
Over the last 20 years Dode greatly enjoyed her life in Lion’s Place and Lion’s Manor making countless friends with her love and compassion. Dode was excited to be involved in developing a Sunday night hymn sing at Lion’s Place where residents could join together in song and worship.
Dode loved her family and friends deeply and is survived by nephews Dennis in Alberta, Paul (Harriet) in Mexico & Michael (Wendy) in Winnipeg, nieces Lesley and Valerie in BC; great-nephews Tim and Hugh (Summer), Colin and Cameron, and Luke and Damon (Anna). All of Dode’s family were privileged to fully experience her endless love, energy and devotion aimed directly at the wellbeing of each one. Dode invested fully in relationships with family and friends ... and that made all the difference in every life she touched.
One of Dode’s greatest joys was celebrating her 100th birthday last March, surrounded by so many who loved her dearly. That day left a glow on her face and in her heart that would never fade ... a topic of conversation to the end.
Dode gave her life to Jesus as a young girl and never looked back. Sharing that message in love, was the burning ember in her life.
Thanks to the love and care Dode received from the staff at Lion’s Manor over the years, and to the compassionate care from doctors, nurses and aides, while a patient in Grace Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, November 26th at 2:00 pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, with Pastor Bruce Martin officiating.
