

He leaves behind Dorothy, his wife, love and best friend for more than four decades. She was the inspiration for many songs he wrote, and his travel companion on numerous adventures in Canada and around the world.
He also leaves behind three wonderful children, Carllie (Bernie) – a special memory is her achieving her Master’s Degree at the University of Calgary in 2016, Deborah – nothing stood out like Doug presenting her with her Graduation diploma at Mount Royal University, and Christopher (Christine) – while coaching his hockey team stands tall, it is surpassed by one day recently when Chris flew in from Calgary, just to visit his Dad; and 6 super grandchildren, Adam, Amandah, Angela, Epic, Jared, and Sylvia. He also leaves behind brothers and sisters-in-law Audrey and Jack and Barb and Dave and their respective families. He was predeceased by his father Earl Douglas, his mother, Dorothea, and his stepfather Richard, and also his father-in-law James, and mother-in-law Dorothy.
Doug was proud of many of his life achievements including; winning the Canada Jaycees National Effective Speaking competition; appearing on three television quiz shows; writing over 100 songs with his favorite recorded by Honey West, being “Lovin’ Dimes”; a certificate of Merit from the American Song Festival for the “Things I’d Rather Not See” Doug’s lyrics written to a Paul Anka tune; Honorable Mention for the city of Calgary Winter Olympics song writing competition; an unpublished book, titled “Looking Back”, dealing with the songs and artists of the fifties; reaching #3 on the McNally Robinson fiction best seller list for his book Lottery Inc.; being the youngest Vice President for international insurance broker Johnson & Higgins; Executive Vice President with Field Aviation; President and CEO of the award winning Southport Aerospace and the subject of another of his books being “Economic Development for Bases”; the last of his books being “The Animal Store”, a children’s song book; founding Winnipeg Chair and several time award winner of The Executive Committee (TEC; past President of the Winnipeg West Rotary Club; President of Fort Garry Progressive Conservative Riding Association; Chairman of the Board of Mount Royal University; Chairman of the Board of Versatech Industries; Chairman of the Board of Elite Communications; Board member of Riverview Health Centre.
In Doug’s honor, The Doug and Dorothy Thomson Scholarship for Geriatric and Palliative Care Nursing has been established at the Winnipeg Foundation by Doug’s Executive Committee members.
Doug loved life and his family and leaves with a smile and thank you for having enjoyed his 76 years.
A service will be held on Tuesday June 6 at 2:00pm at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, followed by a reception.
