EDYTHE JOYCE CHRISTIE (nee Harrison) 1937 - 2012 Joyce Christie passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Riverview Health Centre. She was predeceased by her husband (John) of 47 years and her parents Gilbert and Nellie (nee Adams). She will be sadly missed by her children Heather and Lynne Christie, and her grandsons, Brendan and Carson Domoney. She is also survived by her brother Glen Harrison (Margaret), nephew Reid (Cathryn), nieces Nancy and Susan, (Roger LeGrand) and their families, brother-in-law James Christie (Glenna) and sister-in-law Elizabeth Christie. Joyce was born in Winnipeg on April 6, 1937. She grew up in the West End attending Issac Brock, Laura Secord and Gordon Bell High School. She thoroughly enjoyed 3 years of teaching and coaching at Westwood Collegiate when it first opened. While her girls were growing up she spent many hours volunteering in the community with a passion for social justice. A few of her many contributions included Oxford and Westworth United Church committees, Winnipeg Presbytery Executive, President of the Winnipeg YWCA, President of the Manitoba Synchronized Swimming Assoc., President of the Women’s Inter-church Council of Canada, and served on the Board of Directors of Synchro Swim Canada, Manitoba Sports Federation and the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. In 1980 Joyce returned to the mainstream workforce first at the Young United Senior Citizen’s Day Centre and then moved to St. Vital United Church as a Staff Associate. Joyce's greatest pleasure besides her family, friends and dogs was the cottage at West Hawk Lake. She spent as many weekends and summers there as she could and was looking forward to a ride in her new boat this summer. Joyce had a life-long love of sports and always enjoyed telling the story of a United College vs U of M women’s football game she quarterbacked at the Winnipeg Stadium during a Bomber Game intermission. A celebration of Joyce's life will take place on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, with reception to follow. The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre for their care and kindness during the final few hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joyce's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9 or a charity of your choice.
