Peacefully on May 17th at Charleswood Care Centre, our Uncle, Garry Duguay passed away at the age of 85.
Garry was predeceased by his Mother Josephine, his father Joseph, brother Allen and sister in law Joan.
Garry will be missed by his family. Niece and Nephews, Jeff (Lorraine), Dana (Tony), Steven and Mark (Kerry). As well as great niece Jenna and great nephews Justin, Ryan and Jordan. He will also be dearly missed by Rose, his longtime caregiver and 2nd mom.
Gary was born October 1, 1940 in Winnipeg. Growing up in Fort Garry, he attended General Byng School. Gary resided with his mother until her passing. In 1985 Garry joined Rose and her family in her home. Here he was lovingly looked after for 40 years. During this time Gary enjoyed a family unit once again. As a member of Rose’s family he participated in family events, Sunday morning church, fishing and bonding with Rose’s two sons. He shared responsibility of household chores. Garry had found his safe place. He loved his family immensely.
Uncle Garry was a jolly and outgoing person. He loved to be the center of attention. He loved to talk and share stories! There was never a dull moment with Garry around! When Christmas arrived, he spent it with his “Duguay” family. He entertained us with his fabulous suit, dubbed his “Johnny Carson” suit….his fabulous fur hat named “the Gorbachev”. He was always fun to be around. Uncle Garry loved a beer! His first words when arriving in the front door at Christmas was…”Sure, I’d love a beer”!!
Our uncles one true passion was Stock Car racing and of course the speedway! He had a long history of attending both Brooklyns and Victory Lane. He knew every driver and made many friends there. His good friends Brian and Norine say he was Winnipegs greatest race fan!
Uncle Garry also adored music. His favourites being Elvis and Johnny Cash. He had a great sense of rhythm and loved to dance. At Christmas there was alway an aunt to join him for a dance!
Uncle Garry faced many challenges in his life. With the love of family and good friends, he lived a good, long and fulfilling life.
Our heartfelt thank you to Rose and her family, who gave our uncle a loving home for so many years. Thank you for understanding him, accepting him and loving him for who he was.
Thank you to unit 6 at Charleswood Care centre, especially Peter, for taking such good care of Garry. Also Grace Hospital for your kind care.
A graveside service will take place on June 17th at 1 pm at Thomson in the Park. With reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Garry’s memory to Cancer Care Manitoba or a charity of choice
