It is with love and much sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, Garth Napper on July 16th, 2025 at 86 years of age.
He will be lovingly remembered by many but especially by his children, Doug and Corinne (Brian), his grandchildren, Michelle (Taylor) and Carson and his great granddaughter, Lyla. He will also be missed by his siblings, Sheila (Jack), Dale, Terry and Wendy (Ross) as well as his extended family including Marge's side of the family who welcomed him as their own and long time friends who were an integral part of their lives. Garth is predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie, as well as by his sisters, Lynne (Wayne), Heather (Mark) and Valerie (Walter).
Born in August 1938 on the family farm at Silver Ridge, Manitoba, his family was well known in the community for owning a movie theatre and also screening films in community halls around the area. He went on to join the Royal Bank of Canada at the age of 17 and enjoyed his 35 year career, working hard to support the communities he was a part of through his work, volunteering and being a part of a service organization. Though the majority of his time was spent as a bank manager in Atikokan, Ontario he started out in Langruth MB, and was moved to Thompson, several locations in Winnipeg, back to Langruth as a bank manager. He was then moved to Atikokan for 18 years becoming entrenched in that community before one last move - he ended his banking career in Dryden ON in 1991. He felt a lot of pride in the positive impact that his work provided for many families, happy that he had a hand in moving their lives forward.
Garth and Marge then moved to Comox BC in 1991 to be near Marge's family, enjoying their time there with them and the milder climate, without mosquitoes or blackflies, spending an enjoyable retirement making friends in the community and church there. Garth was hit hard by Marge's death in 2017, taking some time but then moving back to Winnipeg to be near his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. He had a steep learning curve - learning how to work on a computer, the joys of a smartphone and cultivating a small repertoire of meals he was proud of. He enjoyed playing canasta and crib, putting together puzzles, taking trips - day trips, longer ones to the west coast or even just a walk to Timmies', he also enjoyed keeping up with the news and spending time with his family.
Dad, you spent your entire adult life devoted to making our family's lives better. From your dedication to your work at the bank, to the long hours spent driving to and from BC on our annual vacations, to your almost pathological need to pay the restaurant bill, we have always felt the warmth of your unconditional love, support and commitment. We love you.
Success to temperance.
His cremation has taken place and the details of the service next spring will be posted on the Klassen Funeral Home website in the coming days.
